Flashing OD light after rebuild AT installed

I have a 98 Ranger 4.0 2wd. OD light flashes, it shifts bad then after turning off it stops flashing. But then starts up again shortly after. Theres only so many things this could be at this point. I bought this truck months ago, it immediately started flashing the OD light and the transmission blew within 20 miles. We determined the guy that installed the AT previously didnt torque down the upper bolts and the tranny seperated from the engine causing all hell to break loose. Anyways I spent 1600 on getting that transmission rebuilt, I had my friend install it, he is a certified transmission mechanic so he did everything right. We installed a new Torque converter as well. Well after test driving it, it seemed great on a few short drives. Shifted great, ran great, then i took it about 8 miles and the damn OD light started flashing and the shifting was bad again. The transmission is fully rebuilt, torque converter is new, it was professionally installed. What the hell could this be? The speed sensor? Ive read conflicting information on these threads about if it could be the speed sensor. Or could the solenoids be bad? I know i should just take it to a shop to get it scanned but I'd like to see if anyone can help me before I try that. Thank you

Welcome to the forum

No, there are not "only a few things it could be"

Especially after a rebuild, get the codes read, transmission code are in the 700's, i.e. P0734 or P0755

New parts just mean NEVER tested now-a-days

Last time I checked transmissions were rebuild by human beings, and human beings make mistakes, so nothing is off the table at this point

1998 speed sensor is the ABS sensor on the rear axle, if it failed ABS light would come on, and speedometer wouldn't work

Do you think its possible that overfilling the transmission could be the cause? It was hard to get a good reading last night, I thought I had it perfect. I put in 10 quarts altogether which is supposed to be the correct amoun. First I added 6 quarts then started it up, added some more, sat there and went through the gears for a while and adding the rest of the fluid. But i remembered that we did add some ATF into the new torque converter, so there might be half or so quart more than capacity in there. One thing I just realized is the OD light started flashing as I started driving downhill for about a mile. I have been taking it on short 2-3 mile drives on flat roads and everything was perfect, the light didnt start flashing till i started driving downhill after a few minutes. So Im wondering if I overfilled with fluid and once i started going downhill it began to foam up or inside or something. There are no leaks anywhere. As soon as I got it home, I checked the fluid and the color seemed fine, but the level looked like it was at the top of the crosshaired section on the dipstick. So mainly my question is.... did I over fill it and could this have caused the flashing OD light and hard shifting? After I got it home, shut it off then started it back off, OD light wasnt flashing anymore.

OD light flashes during the setting of a code or it there is a problem occurring that that time

You need to read the codes

No not from overfilling, it will dump fluid out the vent tube if overfilled

You want to speculate on whats wrong, which is fine, I would rather look at any codes first to narrow down the 100+ possible problems

From what I learned from car repair tv shows about auto transmissions, something like this could be loose bolts inside the transmission.
causing the tourq converter or other parts to now work properly .
JMHO
Any way Good Luck.

Wondering if you ever found the problem my 2000 ranger was having the light flash to I put a transmission in still did it and torque converter so I took it to a professional and they put three transmissions and torque converters they put a new computer in to still didn’t fix the problem change the type of torque converter and has been working good for over a year

I have had flashing O/D on my 2 wheel drive 2.5l for over 18 months. My speedometer does not work either. Took to transmission shop and guy said, “it’s not your transmission, it’s fine…”. I replaced ABS/speed sensor twice and nothing changes. I tried unplugging sensor and then is the only time the ABS light comes on. I’ve watched videos, looked through my fuses, I’m really lost on how to repair. I figure if I take to Ford dealership, they’re going to charge me $$$ for a $20 part.

any ideas or suggestions?

Welcome to the forum

You should always start your own thread unless you are answering a question for the original poster of a thread

Its called High Jacking a thread
But this thread is from 2019 so I don't think the OP will mind, but for future reference start your own thread, and include the YEAR of your Ranger
Assuming 1998-2000 Ranger, as these are the only years that used rear ABS sensor for speed as well as ABS

No speedometer and flashing OD light means cluster and computer are both without a speed signal from the GEM module
If the ABS light works, comes on with key on then goes off, but doesn't come on when driving then the no speedometer issue is NOT related to the rear ABS sensor, that would also trigger the ABS light

So with no mentioned ABS light your issue is the GEM connection to rear ABS sensor wires, or the GEM itself, or the 1 wire that comes out of the GEM and runs to the cluster, computer and cruise(if so equipped)
GEM module is behind the radio, I would start there, unplug its connection and check for corrosion, then you can also test wire connections

For further help start your own thread it will be easier

Sorry for “hijacking” thread. I will look into what you said, as it makes the most logical solution. If I have further questions, I will indeed start new thread.
