Gears vs spline count

I've been searching and can't find what I'm looking for. I am looking into buying some 4.88's. I currently have a 28 spline 8.8, looking to get a 31 spline in the future.

Would the gears be interchangable between the 28 and 31 spline axles? or would I need a new pinion?

No all the internals are different between the two. If you want the gears now just do a disc conversion to the 28 spline or wait to regear when you have the 31 spline.

Gotcha. I thought only the axles and pinion would be different.

The 28 spline gears will work, in a 31 spline housing, you will just need to change the ring gear over to the 31 spline carrier when you do your rear axle swap.

Buy the gears for your 28 spline, and switch the gears to your 31 spline when you get it.

It is the exact same ring and pinion between the 2 axles.

Thats sort've what I was thinking, I just thought that the spline count was different, and that the 31splines had larger axle shafts/tubes.

I might as well wait until I find a 31 spline before I get anything installed.

Thanks for the info.
