88 ranger engine swap
so I think I have decided to swap in a 4.0 in place of my 2.9 I have a parts truck with 4.0 but it’s automatic and I’d like to stay with the manual. In ordering a new clutch would I order in one for a 2.9 since that’s where the transmission came off of or order a clutch for a 92 4.0 that’s the year of engine. And is there other things I might need to consider when doing the swap ?

You need to know what trans is in your 1988, if 2WD not 4x4 then you could have either M5OD-R1 or Mitsubishi FM132 manual trans, both are 5-speed
On driver's door back edge is a label, look at the bottom under TRANS, D = Mitsubishi FM132, M = Mazda M50D-R1
1988 2.9l 4x4 would have the Mitsubishi FM146, also trans code D
If label is not available then look at transmission, FM132 or FM146 has a lower cover than can be unbolted, like an automatic trans, M5R1 doesn't, its a solid case on the bottom
You should used the 4.0l fly wheel, starter motor and clutch set for the 1992, but..............you need to use the Clutch Slave for the transmission model, they are different lengths
You will need 4.0l fly wheel, 1996 or earlier
You will need to get a 4.0l MANUAL TRANS starter motor, the automatic won't work
You also need the 4.0l manual trans separator plate, You may be able to use the 2.9l separator plate but you will have to enlarger the starter motor hole in the plate
The 4.0l computer will want to have two O2 sensors so you need to swap over that part of the exhaust
You need the 4.0l radiator
