P0760 code

hi guys,

i just git got the check engine light on with the flashing OD off light. I pulled the code and it’s p0760 solenoid C malfunction. I was going to change the fluid and filter this weekend so I’ll replace the solenoid as well. Is there anything else I should replace while I’m at it? There’s no need to replace all solenoids, right?

let me know and thanks in advance

truck is 2003 ford ranger 2.3 automatic by the way

Welcome to the forum

Diagnostic codes are helpful but you need to look them up on a FULL LIST, like this: OBD-II Trouble Codes : The Ranger Station

Computer usually has several codes it can choose from for any part it monitors

For solenoid C it has 5
P0760 Shift Solenoid C Malfunction
P0761 Shift Solenoid C Performance or Stuck Off
P0762 Shift Solenoid C Stuck On
P0763 Shift Solenoid C Electrical
P0764 Shift Solenoid C Intermittent

760 is "computer doesn't have a clue", lol

A solenoid opens and close a Valve in the valve body, this routes fluid pressure to the clutches and bands(brakes)
763 would means wiring or coil in the solenoid is bad
761 with no 763 would mean valve is stuck off and 762 is valve stuck on
764 means valve is moving but not every time solenoid C is activated.

You have a 5R44E transmission, which is the same as 4R44E, 5R55E

Good look here at the valve body parts: http://www.abtomat.ru/img/cat/4R44E-5R55E-ZIP.pdf

And it tells you when solenoid C(SSC) is used during shifting
You can also see the valve it operates, it could be clogged up, or gasket/seal is leaking

Yes, changing fluid and filter is always good, changing solenoid "might" help, but I would test it, OHM meter and you can hook it up to 12volts and ground as well, no polarity, should activate then retract when ground or 12v is removed

Thanks for the very detailed information. I thought the p0760 code was a bad selonoid. Can I run 12v from the battery and use chasis as ground or should I take it to a shop to get it tested?

I just had a similar issue with my 09... Same trans (5r44e) except I have a p0750 code which is the same thing but on solenoid "A" instead of "C". I ended up pulling the whole valve body off to install a shift kit while I was in there but in my case the spring inside the solenoid was broken so it could have been fixed by just changing the solenoid out. As soon as I took the solenoid off I could physically feel it rattle so easy diagnosis. I would do the same, pull it off, volt and ohm test it and physically inspect it. You might get lucky like me and just have a defective solenoid which is cheap and easy to swap out and not have to track down pressure leaks or wires...

Inspecting it is only gonna cost you 4 quarts of trans fluid and a half hours time. So thats my advice before taking it to a shop. Worst case scenario you wasted some time and 20 bucks of fluid.

Yeah, I’ll do that. Is there any way to remove the solenoid without taking out the valve body or it had to come out first?

Thanks for your advice!

No need to remove the valve body, I just did it because I've been looking for a reason to install a shift kit. All you need to do is remove the pan and its easily accessible.

Drop the pan, remove the filter, disconnect the wiring harness by carefully pulling it off the solenoids, remove the solenoid retaining clip held on with a 10mm bolt, then gently pull/pry the solenoid out. If you can change a transmission filter you can change a solenoid.

I replaced the fluid, filter and the solenoid this past weekend and the code went away and it’s shifting like it should. Thanks for helping me with this issue!

I'm getting the same thing, but p0760. (Solenoid C) on my 07 Ranger XLT Auto. 2.4L 2x4.
Is there a diagram showing which solenoid is which in the transmission pan? "C" to be exact.
I read somewhere there is ~9qts of Transmission fluid, is that correct?
So only 4 quarts will come out of the transmission pan/and filter? The rest (~5.5 will stay in the transmission) ?
