Wondering if I can put a manual shift 1354 into an 05 ranger. I see a few used ones for sale on line, but all say for the 01 to 03 ranger only... is this just because manual shift was not an option in 05, or because it won't bolt in, assuming I cut a hole for the shifter? I use my truck as a work truck, and 1st and reverse are way to high geared in many situations -- backing a trailer up, starting a trailer on a hill, heavy load on a hill. So I need to use low range a bit, and the electric shift just isn't cutting it. I just replace the shift motor and the computer, and it worked for two days perfect... and now refuses to shift again. I much prefer a manual shift transfer case anyway, like my 91 F150 and my 98 tacoma have (and I use it in slow or steep situations on them as well, as both of them have too high of 1st and reverse too). Just wondering if I buy a manual shift 1354 if it'll be a bolt in replacement for this truck.
And, just to explain my username, this ranger has a TDI engine from a VW passat in it. 2.0 liter, and similar power to the stock 4.0 V6 that came in the truck -- but feels a bit more powerful on the highway on hills because torque is a little higher. Getting high 20's to low 30's for mpg.
I assume you're running the stock Ranger transmission via an adapter to the VW engine. If this is true, the manual transfer case should bolt up just fine. They only list 01-03 because that's the only years they were offered.
Are you finding just the manual shift transfer case or the entire transmission and transfer case? The manual transfer case needs a special extension housing that has the bosses on it for the manual shift linkage attachment. That extension housing is nearly impossible to find. I understand there is a way to make your own attachments for the shift linkage, but I think it would take a lot of effort and frustration.
If you can get the correct extension housing, linkage and transfer case; it should not be that difficult to install. You should be able to even use your existing transmission by just exchanging the extension housing.
Hmnmm. Yes I'm finding just the transfer case.... no shifter, or apparently, place to mount the shifter... wonder how difficult it is to fab up a shifter mount, vs trying to fab up something to manually turn the electronic shift transmission between settings :)
Yes, you can use any 1998 to 2003 BW1354m, in place of your BW1354e, they all used same bolt patterns, and splines
(You may need to change the rear drive shaft yoke, as 3" and 3.5" yokes were both used in Rangers, not a big deal, but need to check)
You will need to source M5OD-R1 4x4 tail shaft housing that has the bungs(bolt holes) for manual transfer case shifter mounting
Manual shifter parts are VERY HARD to get, not the transfer case, the shifter and its parts, so make sure you get ALL the shifter parts with the transfer case, including interior boot and bracket
Another option is the made to order Behemoth electric to manual conversion kit for the BW1354, seen here: https://behemothdrivetrain.com/produ...onversion-kit/
Expensive but...............you don't need to change anything you have now
