Reverse intermittent

Hi everyone, I have a 2004 Ford Ranger 4x4 4.0L. The reverse sometimes works as it should, sometimes not at all and sometimes very little (slips). All other gears work as they should. What are possible issues that could cause this? I know about the band issue but would think that would cause no reverse at all. There are no codes. Also where is the line pressure port?

Welcome to the forum

In all automatics Reverse requires higher pressure than Forward gears to engage
So yes, from your description it reads like a pressure issue, if increasing engine RPMs helps engaged Reverse faster then for sure a pressure issue

Pressure test ports seen here: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums...ons.38369/full

Need a gauge that is rated up to 400psi

Some numbers in this PDF: https://atracom.blob.core.windows.ne.../2003_5_50.pdf

Yes fluid level is full Ranger 480.

thanks RonD.
so my mainline pressure is 150 psi at idle and 350 psi at WOT.
my EPC is 90 psi at idle and 135 at WOT.

And those numbers are with trans in Reverse?

If so, not a pressure issue, which is a bummer, lol, so valve body is not leaking, which means problem will be in the rotating part of transmission, so rebuild to repair

yes that’s with trans in reverse. Dang lol. Wasn’t sure if it could possibly be the servo?
