Struggling to select 5th gear.
Struggling to select 5th gear.
Having trouble selecting 5th, it’s as if it’s not there and the gear stick just pops back out. I’ve tried different speeds, doubling the clutch, revving a little between gears but about 80% of the time it doesn’t select.
Last week whilst struggling to select 5th, I went to 6th instead and then pop....no drive at all, which turned out to be a split clutch plate (centre had split from friction plate part).
I assumed when the mechanics fixed this, it would fix 5th gear.
They said it was all good when test driven but I had the same trouble less than 10km up the road.
Does anyone know what the problem is?
Is it something I can do myself?

Probably the gears inside tranny are out of alignment. Saw a video on it years ago. Cant remember exactly. There is a fork that goes inside tranny and moves a gear around. If something is off just a smidge in there it creates problems. I believe it was Eric the car guy with some transmission specialist doing a rebuild talking about this. I'll see if I can find vid.
Welcome to the North American Ranger forum
You are in Australia so have a completely different Ranger than the one we have here
Yours is a T6 Ford Ranger
We got a similar body style to yours in 2019/20 but still a different "animal", we don't have diesel option, petrol only and 4cyl, we also only get automatics, no manuals any more, let alone a 6-speed manual, lol
That being said
On manual transmissions with cross cut gears there is a detent that holds the shifter in the selected gear or it will "pop out" of gear because of the cross cut on the gears
If your transmission is a "top loader" you can often fix it without total disassembly but you still need to pull out the transmission in most cases
