Tranny problems. Any advice would be great!

Just got home from a 250 mile trip no probs until i got home. My 99 3.0L automatic ranger wont shift into reverse. Shifts fine into park, drive, 1st and 2nd. but no reverse at all. Checked tranny fluid, all good. I dont have much for tranny experience and was hoping someone might have an idea.

been busy hunting and all but i dropped the pan and fluid was clean, no metal filings and wasnt burned at all. Thinking i should get a filter kit and replace the valve body gasket. make sure i dont have any pieces in the valvebody. Seems to me like that might be the problem? thanks for the help

I have an explorer 4.0l 4x4 im working on and it has the same problem(as well as a mountian of other problems). I was going to check the valve body gasket this weekend but I can't find a replacement valve body gasket anywhere. Where do I need to buy it from?

Really? Wow ya i just went down to the local NAPA and they had one left in stock. Thats crazy. Guess i just expected they would have one or could order one. I dont know if the 4.0l have a different tranny and would require different gasket?? Planning on getting that gasket changed on mine this weekend too. Let ya know if it works.

the gasket napa has is probably not the "valve body gasket" more commonly known as the separator plate gasket. go to the dealer and get one...the torque specs are crucial for the valve body so get a workshop manual before attempting to replace the separator plate gasket yourself. if the separator plate gasket was blown, you would have a slipping in reverse but probably not no reverse. lift the rear wheels off the ground and see if you have reverse then

I was told it didn't have reverse. I have no idea what's going on with it. It has been sitting for over a year and doesn't start now. There isn't any fuel pressure so I'm guessing fuel pump or no gas at all. gauge shows half a tank. do you think a half tank would evaporate in a year?

replaced the valve body gasket, and ya i had to go to a transmission shop to pick up the valve body gasket. Replaced it follwing my manual, making sure to get the right torque specs and pattern right. still no reverse. didnt lift wheels off ground but it acts like it slips. While i had it all apart everyting seems fine, no burnt tranny fluid, no filings. I had a question though. one of the soleniods was somewhat loose. Is that normal? Could my problem be a bad solenoid?

there is just a tab and the o-ring that holds them in place so they might feel loose
