Transmission issue
Hello,
new here. Just took my 2003 ford ranger edge to a mecanic. My transmission was broken so i needed someone to swap it out witha. Used one. Drives worse now. And i do not know if i ahould rebuilt the new one or what to do with it. The mecanic put the used transmissiong ran into problems where the truck did not want to start he got it fix but now when i turn on the truck the gauge is in the park position but the truck automatically goes in reverse. Any help or suggestions in this matter will be helpful

Welcome to the forum
2003 Ranger
What engine?
2.3l, 3.0l, or 4.0l
Used automatic transmission is a roll of the dice
Needs to be from a 2001-2011 Ranger with matching engine, 2000 and earlier won't work well in a 2001 and up
If its just the shifter on the column that's the issue, Google: ford ranger loose column shifter
Usually just loose screws under the dash, not a big deal to fix, and could be why it didn't start after the swap

You have a 5R44E automatic in a 2003 Ranger with 3.0l
But truck doesn't roll with engine off, in Park on a hill?
Park uses a Pawl in the rear of transmission to LOCK the drive shaft(output shaft)
Diagram here: https://streetsmarttransmission.com/...00000001-1.png
So if shifter, on the transmission, is moved to Park that "hammer head" thing goes down and LOCKS the output shaft so rear wheels can't move/roll
Shifter on column and its indicator are "suppose" to show correct selection, but often don't, and has nothing to do with the actual shifter position on transmission
So vehicle can't roll if Park Pawl is engaged, even if its in Reverse or Drive, wouldn't matter
Either its in Park(can't roll) or its not(can roll), can't be both
Mechanic should know all this, its pretty basic stuff, so I would get another mechanic to look at it

You are right. I tested out to see if the park is in gaged but it is not. The car will roll by itself. So when i start the vehicle it is already in reverse position. The mechanic i used is “special”. I dont usually take my vehicles to a mecanic and i asked for one that turned out to be a bad mechanic. I am thinking of rebuilding my old transmission and go from there. Any suggestions?

Current "new" transmission is most likely OK, your shift cable needs to be adjusted so you can get it into Park
Also the DTR(digital transmission range) sensor needs to be adjusted to match, its on the shifter arm on drivers side of transmission, not hard to do but must be done right or No Start
As said, Google: ford ranger loose column shifter
Yes, rebuilding your original transmission is a good idea, but do a full rebuild not just clutches and bands, get new sprags and pump, and usually OD drum
And always a new torque converter
