Transmission swap automatic to manual
Transmission swap automatic to manual
hi , I have a ford ranger 2006 6V 3.0L and I want to swap the Transmision. I want to know if the system transmission of ford ranger 1999 fit perfect to my model. How I can know this ? Or what year fit my ranger ? Thanks
No, to the 1999 model
You need the transmission from a 3.0l Ranger or Mazda B3000, different engine size won't work/fit with your 3.0l
Year matters, 2001 to 2008 M5OD-R1 manual transmission from a 3.0l Ranger will fit and work in your 2006, previous years won't have correct speedometer hook up, there may be a way around this using a Dakota Digital speedometer interface, SGI-5E model.
If the 1999 is a 3.0l engine then SGI-5E could be used with your 2006 Ranger rear ABS sensor to duplicate the OSS sensor's signal found on 2001 and up transmissions, never read about anyone doing this, but on paper it should work
And it needs to match 2WD or 4WD you can't convert them, if you have a 2WD Ranger then you need a 2WD transmission, manual or automatic
Your Computer is setup for an automatic transmission, so it "looks for" the transmission when you turn on the key, if you switch to manual trans it won't find the solenoids and sensors inside the automatic trans, so it will turn on the Check Engine Light(CEL)
The CEL will stay on.........forever, engine will run OK, may have higher idle, but it will run OK.
Computers can be reprogrammed, deleting the automatic trans software
2004 and up can't use a new computer because of electronic dash, well you can but you will have to get a Ford Dealer to "marry" the systems after installation so a towing bill to get it to Ford shop, and what ever Ford Dealer charges you for that service

???
Manual transmission that fits your engine
Clutch pedal
Hole in the floor for shifter
Thats about it
If computer controlled engine, then computer for that year vehicle, engine size, and Manual trans

It would be better to sell your automatic Ranger and buy a manual Ranger
This would be less expensive than trying to do the swap
Fixing a broken automatic would also be cheaper than doing the swap
Google: Ford ranger automatic to manual trans swap
Many many posts about it and some videos, you will see the parts needed, make a list
Automatics are better and stronger than manual transmissions, so not a great swap to begin with, but manuals are easier to work on for most home mechanics.
But anyone with internet access can now rebuild an automatic themselves, many videos and how-tos out there for any model automatic
Your 2006 Ranger 3.0l will have a 5R44E automatic
As said above you would need a M5OD-R1 manual transmission from a 2001-2008 3.0l Ranger or Mazda B3000, and computer from 2004-2008 3.0l Ranger with manual trans
Clutch pedal assembly
Trans support bar
Steering column from manual Ranger(optional)
Wiring harness splicing which I can't help you with

You don't "have to" reprogram the PCM, but the Check engine light(CEL) will be on full time after you start the engine, because the PCM has software to shift an automatic, and there are no longer any solenoids or sensors hooked up, so it turns on the CEL to warn the driver of the problem, i.e. wires are unhooked
Yes, the idle will be higher, automatics have higher idles, and it may wander from time to time, 750-950rpm and back when stopped and idling.
Engine will run and drive fine.
But you can't pass an inspection, because CEL is on
And if there is an engine problem you won't know until it effects driveability because CEL is on all the time so it can't warn you ahead of time

Can't tell from that part number, it is a Revision 1992 M5OD-R1 for/from a Ranger but doesn't specify engine size or 2WD/4WD
The 1992 year is just revision year, could be from a 2002 Ranger, Ford only changes the Year of the part number when there is a major revision, the first M5OD-R1 was 1988 so part number starts with E8, then they did a Revision in 1992 so change it to F2
So you could find a 1980 part number in a 2018 car or truck
The last line is the serial number, and that could tell you if it was in a 3.0l 2WD or 4WD Ranger, but I don't think Ford ever published that info
