Truck won’t move, even in neutral
I’ve got a 91 ranger sport 4x4 with an automatic transmission. I drove it home about 35 miles from where I bought it, parked it in the driveway and the next day it wouldn’t start. It wouldn’t turn over or roll forwards or backwards even in neutral. I checked the shift linkage and it’s intact. I even tried shifting it manually from underneath. The e brake isn’t stuck and the regular brakes aren’t engaged because the truck will shift back and forth when I push hard on it. It feels like something Is locked up. Please help me figure this out. I don’t know what to check next.

Welcome to the forum
Hope you got it for a good price
First the No Crank
So is the battery dead?
It would help if you could get it started
As for the locked up part, do you have a jack?
Can you jack up 1 wheel at a time?
See if it is one wheel that is locked up, bad bearing or brake
It is for sure a wheel that is locked up, they are the only things touching the ground, assuming you walked around the truck looking for a anchor that may have been set over night, and didn't find one, lol
Whats holding that 1 wheel from turning is what you need to find out
You could manually shift transfer case to Neutral or drop rear drive shaft, either takes engine, trans, transfer case out of the "lock up".
Front axle should have auto hubs or manual hubs which would be unlocked so I doubt front differential would be the problem.
To shift transfer case to Neutral read here: How to: Rebuild 4X4 Shift Motor | Ford Explorer and Ford Ranger Forums - Serious Explorations
In 4th picture down you will see the shift rod pointed at 2H(2 wheel drive)
Remove shift motor, 4 bolts
Neutral is not marked but is opposite of 2H
So use a pair of pliers to rotate shift rod 180deg to point opposite of 2H
The shift rod does not turn 360deg, it turns from 2H counter-clockwise to 4L(4low) then back clockwise to 2H
Neutral is in between 4L and 4H
BE CAREFUL
As you look for the locked up wheel and find it the truck may begin to ROLL AWAY
So have another wheel blocked just in case
Put some wood or ?? blocks a few inches in front and back of 1 wheel while you check the other 3 wheels
Hope you got it for a good price

The battery is brand new. As soon as I turn the key I hear a loud tap and the engine doesn’t turn. The sound comes initially from the starter and then another loud tap from somewhere in the middle of the truck. Almost like it’s stuck In gear or something. Put a bar on the engine and tried to turn it manually and it won’t budge.

Reads like trans is fried.
Any odd issues shifting on the drive home?
have you checked color and smell of trans fluid?
Engine is bolted to torque converter, torque converters outside case is connected to front pump in trans if trans failed/overheated if could have welded itself together on cool down, so doesn't matter what gear you select main drive in trans can't turn
You could remove the 6 spark plugs, assume V6 engine, and then see of truck will roll turning crank when it does, but I doubt it.
Either drop rear drive shaft or shift transfer case to neutral to put truck somewhere you can work on it.
Reads like you will be pulling out the transmission
