Wierd Tranny Whine

Well I bought my 94 ranger for almost nothing with a boat load of problems. The tranny whines in 1rst 2nd and 3rd. But you shift into 4th and it magically goes away. Any reason for it ? I have a spare tranny for it but I'd feel better rebuilding it before I put it in. Any idea where to get a rebuilt kit for the 4 cylinder mazda tranny ?

no it is definitely the tranny because when you push in the clutch it goes away.

You have worn out bearing in the trans. The reason you don't hear it whine in 4th gear is because 4th gear has a 1 to 1 ratio and goes straight through the transmission without any gearing. As for getting the rebuild kit, there are websites out there, but your best bet is a local trans parts supplier. Its not the most common rebuild kit so only a specialty shop would probably carry it, unfortunately I only know of shops in my neck of the woods.

I think Ill jsut throw the spare one I have in without rebuilding it then if its not good I'll swap out the bearing. That sounds about right though. Also when I let out the clutch in neutral it makes a feint noise. Any idea what it is ? My clutch going ?

That still could be a bearing. When you release the clutch in neutral the input shaft of the trans is still spinning, but since there is no loud on the input shaft the noise would be much quieter. I don' think you a faint noise in neutral would indicate your clutch is going unless you are having other symptoms like it slipping while engaged.

nah the clutch doenst have any slipping. It was replaced by the previous owner 40k ago. Good pressure still. I'll just have to yank the tranny I guess. No biggie. How in danger am I of it blowing up. I really want to wait to spring to do it.
