Well I finally got around to cutting up my hitch I got a while back at the junk yard. I ended up just cutting 3" out of it, I wanted to maybe do more but I figured this would be fine. I had to remove the rear bumper since I had the mounts in the same area as the hitch mounts. It needed alot of work and some new mounts so I just decided to make a whole new bumper. I had a bunch of 2x5 and 2x2 tube steel laying around so I figured I'd see what I could do with it. And since I am layed off this keeps me busy, not working sucks.

Here are a few pics of the process of both, Not finished on the bumper yet cause I ran out of wire today, but should have it all finished and painted tomorrow. So I will throw up some new pics when It is.

here is the hitch all chopped up and tacked


here it is all welded up, with an added fish plate to the sides.




The bumper I used some 2x5 and 2x2 combined to make a 7" bumper with tapered ends. I thought about tipping the ends in to wrap around the edge of the bed more but I got lazy and left it strait.


The mounts to the frame are temps will be 1/4" plate and sandwiched between the frame and the hitch

Next I went to work on my d-ring tabs. I decided to build some instead of buy some to save some money. I used 3 pieces of 1/4" plate welded together.

Cut holes in the bumper to let the tabs pass through to be welded on the backside and front




Fully welded on the front, have to finish the rear when I get wire.Also have to weld the seam of the two pieces together and grind it down before I paint.


what it looks like on the truck..pretend the stick isn't there The hitch sits right up tight to the bottom of the bumper.



Pretty simple design but it works, should fit better when I make my front bumper and when I get my sas done.

I am not sure about the shackle mounts, that is made from hot rolled steel, most are cold rolled which is much stronger. It should be fine but it may bend or open up the hold some depending on use.

Why don't you get some 2.5x2.5 .25 wall square tubing and add a receiver to the bumper itself, so you don't have anything else hanging below the bumper? You can leave the square tubing a little long on the front side and add some ribbing from it over to the frame mounts.

But I don't like the d-ring mounts because, to me, it looks like they will collect water between the plates and rust from the inside.
I say you should fully weld the face of the bumper where the small and big piece come together and grind it down smooth, incorporate the 2" receiver into the bumper, and sell your receiver to someone else with a body lift. It would look better and get rid of a lot of weight.

the seam will be welded and ground down yes. I'm not too worried about the tabs, I've seen them done that way on a few other builds. Plus if you ever saw the way I did my old ones and they some how held up to a f-350 tugging on me, these will work great. As far as the rust between them, that will be pretty hard since they are very tight together and I will be sealing and painting the hole which is the only spot where it may rust. Yeah I've been pondering just putting a tube through the bumper for a reciever, you guys may have talked me into it. I will just have to make some think *** mounts and a couple more ribs to tie into the frame like Jey said. So I suppose I have a lifted bodylift class 3 hitch to sell heh

yeah I think I'm going to tap and thread two holes for it, and use some rubber o-rings around the bolts so it will seal water from getting in and rusting.

I agree on the receiver in the bumper idea. Might as well maximize your departure angle as much as you can.

edit: picked up a reciever tube and my wire so I'm ready to rock. But Its going to have to wait till tomorrow morning to get worked on. got too busy today. But I did paint my wheels last night just for ****s
