2001 Ford ranger xlt 2.3 road rot

Okay, so this is the left side of body frame near the rear end ( specifically, attached to the rear bumper. ) I am taking it in to the shop next week to see about getting that specific road rot replaced along with a similar one right next to it. I posted on a machanic forum asking about possible prices, so I have an idea of how much the repair would cost ( I basically invested 12 grand into it in total ) to which made my anxiety flair up because I was told by one person to junk it because it's totaled from the rust, even though I live in a state where you need a vehicle of some sort to get around period. The left side of the rear frame has more road rot than the right side for now, because there is two maybe three road rot spots, including the photo below ( but far smaller than the one in the photo ). I am worried that this may not be repairable ( even though I saw a video where some guy doing a repair job in this exact area with a repair kit or something and a welder. ) If anyone has some advice on this or encouraging words, it would be very helpful as this is the second vehicle I have owned. I mean, I have been saving up to make repairs to my truck. I just hope I have enough to cover the damage.

Welcome to the forum

Not really Ranger specific issue, pretty much a pickup truck issue, lol

Google: 2001 ford ranger rear frame repair kit

If you don't have a welder then you can call in a Mobile welder to do this repair at your place
You should remove the bed yourself, just 6 bolts and 3 screws on the filler, and unplug taillight wires

Then the Welder can come in and cut out the old part and weld in the new part, might take 2 hours

You will need to get new Rear Leaf Spring Hangers, they should come with bolts and bushings
You will need 2 jack stands and a jack to hold the main frame up while replace rear frame and hangers

What if.... let's say you wanted to take it to a shop to get it done instead? Would that effect me differently? As that road rot I showed in the picture above made that side of the rear bumper feel weaker when I stepped on it. ( That's how I found out about the new road rot forming. ) I am mostly focused on that particular side of the bumper. I had to Google leaf spring hangers, because I had no idea what the were at all.

A shop will want to/need to do a bit more work because they need to warranty it, so be prepared for "sticker shock", lol, its not a rip off they just need to, dot the "i"s and cross the "T"s, to make it "road worthy"

Yes, the rear spring hangers are attached at the rear of the frame so will also need to be replaced when the rear frame rail is replaced

In that photo that you showed me. Those tips are the ones that are rusted. The left side is bad, but right side is okay, but something th
o keep an eye on. And what do you mean by sticker shock?

Cost of a shop doing the work is sticker shock, the difference in what you think the job should cost after pricing out parts, and what the shop quotes

Oh! So in other words it's gonna be pricy. I know that lol. I'm just worried that I won't be able to pay what they quote, even though that I will focus on the one side if nessasary. I know that the last time I had to remove road rot, they said it would cost 400$ I think? Maybe 600$? I don’t remember the price, but I do know that it didn't cost a lot. I have been saving up, but an ******* smashed my windshield so I had to dip into it just to make it road worthy ( I live in a state where you can get in deep **** for driving with cracked windshield. ) I do have enough for to make some minor repairs, just not a lot. The rest of the road rot is a lot smaller, but for all I know they could want to get rid of it or swap out the entire thing which I heard is expensive. But the road rot is mostly located near the tail tips from the photo you showed me. So if I have to, I will focus on the worst of it first; then save up to get the rest replaced.
