add tachometer

Have a 2000 ford ranger. I installed a 02 motor and transmission. My cluster does not have a tach.
Question: can I purchase an aftermarket tach and install it in my ranger? I would like to go this rather than going to the junkyard and buy a used cluster. Where would I get the signal from. The engine harness is a 2002 and the computer is a 2000.
thanks

There will be a tan/yellow stripe wire on pin 15 of the 16pin plug on the back of the cluster, that has the tach signal for the cluster, its there on all wiring harness's regardless of whether or not the Ranger came with a tach
That wire runs thru firewall to the PCM(engine computer) pin 48, the source of the tach signal
