Crashed my Ranger, questions about auto body repair shop.

Hello, sadly I crashed my Ranger. I hit a slippery spot and lost control hitting the post of a bridge. Luckily I wasn't injured badly and had full coverage insurance. Here is the issue, they billed my insurance $2500.00 just to "get it rolling to check for other issues", then 5400 for whatever issues they found. Flash forward a month, I am suppose to pick up my vehicle today and I get a call saying the frame is bent and need full replacement.

Shouldn't this have been apparent before all the repairs? Are they trying to screw over my insurance? Its a 2008 Ford Ranger 4x4 Sport with 95,000 miles, think it will be totaled after they have spent 7900.00?

Yes, that is a BIG screw up.

Not sure what the "get it rolling" billing would be for other than to get parts out of the way and repair parts needed to get it moveable so they could check it for damage "like a tweaked frame"
With laser tech for the last 20+ years it takes less than 1 hour to test a frame

Now it could be that the engine/trans weight shifted/bent the frame at a spot that did not show up on the fast frame laser check but that is usually noticeable from visual inspection.

Could be a gouge but insurance companies are the bread and butter for repair shops so they really don't like to "bite the hand that feeds them", you get a bad rep and no insurance company will use you.
Customer can pick any repair shop they want but insurance company only pays the amount quote by their repair companies so you pay the difference, and you still have the option

Surprised they agreed to spend $8,000 to begin with, 4x4 are almost always "totaled" in an accident, just too expensive to repair most of the time

If they do total it, make sure you have looked through local, state wide, publications to get your own value for 2008 Ranger 4x4 in your condition prior to the accident, that is what the insurance company does, Kelly Blue Book is NOT Gospel, lol.
They find lowest for sale prices of your approximate vehicle and that's what they will offer, and it is an offer, so if you have your own research with documents of asking prices you will have a counter offer, and maybe squeeze a bit more out of a bad situation.

Glad to read injuries weren't too bad, sorry to read about the loss of your Ranger
