hi, I have a 1994 Ranger Xlt, 2.3 2WD. I’m changing the drum brakes but can’t figure out how the E brake is supposed to connect to the pad? I’ve watched videos on YouTube and have a manual but they all show a different type of brake than mine. My E brake doesn’t have a clip and just (as far as I can tell) slots into the new pad but it keeps falling out of the slot when I start trying to put everything back together. Is it supposed to just be held in by tension?
I’m also having trouble with the piece that runs between the two pads and has a spring on one end. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to slot over both the E brake and the pad or just the pad?
sorry for my lack of knowledge of technical terms but I’d appreciate any input I can get. I didn’t take the other side apart so I could use it as a reference but it’s not much help as far as connecting the E brake back up goes. I can see what goes where but I’m not sure how to reassemble it.
See the part called "Brake parking lever" in there diagram?
It should have a valley/hook bent into it at the bottom.
The diecast(?) cylinder at the end of your ebrake cable is supposed to slip through that, such that the hook of the "brake parking lever" is between the e brake cable end and the coil spring that comes on the cable.
That way, it holds together. It is usually a real pain to get the e brake cable in, and it definitely shouldn't slip out on its own.
The other part you are referring to is what this diagram calls the "link spring". The rear shoe AND "brake parking lever" should fit into the notch in the "link spring" at the rear, and the spring that goes on the link spring should be towards the front shoe.
I have a 94 2wd myself. If this isn't clear enough I'd be happy to pull a rear wheel off and take pictures for reference since it would be exactly the same setup.
As far as getting that e brake cable into the brake parking lever, it takes some playing and patience! I found leaving the other end of the e brake cable NOT in the retainer that goes along the drivers side frame rail, helped me get it in.
Hi Chris I have been fighting with my passenger side shoes if the offer to send a picture of the brake set up still on the the table I would greatly appreciated,
I have the truck in the Netherlands and finding parts here is a real PITA and because of this issue the truck will not pass MOT inspection

thank you for the reply,
it is an American truck export. left hand drive, I figure out what the issue was, it turns out that the emergency brake lever was too big and it wouldn't allowed the shoes to be pulled back to the anchor pin I didn't notice the difference when I replaced all the cables I used the newness supplied with the kit and some how the slot where the parking link is supposed to rest on to the lever was not deep enough, I had already throwaway the old ones so I just made the slot a bit longer and now it seems to be all ok, hopefully it will pass inspection
