Factory Limited Slip

Hey guys,

I'm looking into getting a 2WD 08 Ranger with the factory 4.10/Limit Slip. Anyone try these out in the mud? I know its no 4WD, but must be a lifesaver compare to the 2WD without a limit slip.

Don't know about mud , but in moderate to heavy snow they tend to be a little unpredictable. If you get on it a little bit hard the rear likes to kick out to one side or the other.

i have no experience with the stock limited slip but i do have experience with a 2wd locked and i also own a 4x4 and the ls is way worth it. but i would go for the 4x4 if you really plan on doing any wheelin.

but john griggs has a locked 4x2 and does some pretty amazing stuff.

Well, i don't plan on lifting it, just slapping some 32's on there. 2WD Limited Slip with some good tire should do the trick for a little mud and Montreal's winters. I'd get the 4WD, but it doesn't fit in a students budget.

Thanks

Vindex does it get you out of some "muddy" situations?

I've got a '99 2wd with a limited slip and 32" mud tires. It will do OK if you plan on just splashing through some mud puddles. I've found that as long as you don't flex the suspension out, both wheels will spin. Mostly.

It'll spin only one tire when you really need both to spin.

does it get you out of some "muddy" situations?
In my opinion, it'll get you into more stuff than it'll get you out of.

Read Like This:
"I've got "posi", I can make it!"
[friends watch...]
[wheels spin...]
[reverse lights come on]
[wheels spin in reverse...]
[driver's door opens]
"You got a strap? I'm stuck!"

Don't get me wrong, limited slip is way better than open differential. Especially in a 2wd pickup. But I'm just going to throw this out there...

If you're already asking whether it will go through mud and planning on putting 32s on your truck, I'd buy a truck that was a couple of years older so that you could afford a 4wd.

I regret buying a 2wd everyday. And I don't live in where it snows.

Well put, but damn 04-05 rangers are hard to find around here. Everybody who gets one keeps it and doesn't resell it.

32's on a 2wd ranger are going to be a very tight fit. a lift is most likely required. unless you don't want to take any turns.

^^^ On a Edge or new Sport, no their not they fit fine. They might require a little bit of cranking the tbars, but other then that they wont rub unless a little a full lock, but you'll get used to that.

The Sports have the torsion-bar suspension, unless i'm just completely wrong, but i'm pretty sure they do.

oh ****, u said sport, idk the diff between a sport and a XL-XLT-EDGE. is 08 going to be different?

but a lil research and im sure u can tell. easy way to know is to ask the dealer. lol simple idea. idk about the 08s though, i thought they were staying with spring-suspension

What can I say, us canucks are crazy. I test drove a sport 4.0L. Check it out on ford.ca, go to build a vehicle and you can chose the 4.0L on the sport...commes with 3.55 or 4.10s....if using 32s...which would be preferable? I know on the US site the models by price go XL-XLT-SPORT-FX4....Canada's are XL-SPORT-XLT-FX4. Go figure

32" tires and 3.55 gears are not fun!

I had that combo, although with an automatic transmission. My auto ran much hotter and I couldn't spin my tires as fast in deeper mud. Sometimes you gotta let that mud fly! I installed 4.10 gears and my mileage and power went back to stock levels.

It sounds like you are essentiall trying to build a 2wd truck into have 4wd-like capabilities. Sure you don't expect it to be as good as a 4wd, but you add bigger tires. [cha-ching!] Then you want to regear. [cha-ching!] Then you need to lift it a little because the tires rub when you turn or flex out the suspension. [cha-ching!] Then you decide the limited slip just ain't cutting it anymore... [cha-ching!]

You'll have sunk quite a bit of cash into this setup, but you'll still have ho-hum mud & snow performance. And, that sucks!

The reason I think you'll be disappointed in the future is because I took this same path.

I'm not trying to peepee in your cherios- just sharing some of my experiences.

I haven't ran into much mud but it has gotten me out of the "what was I thinking" situations. L/S and the right tires should do pretty well I would think.

I only played in the mud once so far, but when I did I was going through a couple feet of thick mud in 2wd with the limited slip rear. No problems whatsoever. Even stopped in a few spots, hammered on the gas and proceeded to spin my way right out.
