Help, what do you think about this Ranger for sale?

2002 Ranger extra cab 4x4 with cap

106k miles

This thing is super clean, frame is great .Only a little surface rust back near the leaf springs. Keep in mind im in cleveland and every single one of these is usually rotted back there.

List price at the dealer is $6000. I said its too high and he said he would do 6k out the door. I still think it's too high for an 02 but it is in very good condition.

Let me know what you think. Thank you

Welcome to the forum

Yes, the $6,000 is about $1,000-$1,500 over what I was seeing on Cleveland craigslist for 4x4 Rangers 2001-2003 with around 100k miles
The FX4 Level II would be worth more, it had off-road options only available on that model, including manual transfer case in 2002

Yes there are some rusty Rangers in Cleveland, lol.

Carfax........................pricing is high, they often include "asking price" in areas, NOT actual selling price which they don't have access to and dealers who do report selling price fudge it up, so they can get higher "carfax" pricing on future models, so for the most part ignore it
Look at local truck trader or craigslist for those asking prices

Asking price is set by seller, so always higher than actual "worth"
What anything is "worth" is set by the buyer at the time of the sale, so what its worth is what only you can decide

Right color, right miles, right condition, right options, its really up to you, decide on a price you can live with and make the offer, they can say no or make a counter offer, since this will be a return trip for you they will see "blood in the water" and not want to budge on the asking price, after all you came back knowing they want $6,000.
So have your name and phone number on a piece of paper and say "if you change your mind about my offer then call me", and then LEAVE right away, do not hang around, you don't have to run, lol, but they need to see you are willing to "walk away" after making your offer,
They will either call you or they won't, if they don't then this wasn't the right truck for you, because you will always think you over paid for it

Now the 2001-2004 Rangers with the 4.0l SOHC V6 engine did have timing chain issues which could be helped by changing the 2 long chain tensioners every 70k miles or so
But if they start making a rattling noise then its too late, have to pull the engine to change the rear guides and chain

The 2002 3.0l V6 didn't have any issues over all, 2004-2006 did

Those were the only 2 engines in 1998 and up Ranger 4x4s

Not sure what it's like in Ohio, but here the 6k out the door would be about 1k in savings, taxes, title, registration and dealer fees.

So it wasn't your Ranger after all

Keep looking, someone is driving your Ranger now, keeping it in good shape for you, you just need to find it
