Eh, I've never pushed it but I've gone about 23 with the light on.


Best tank I've done is 446 miles. The 3.slow can get some pretty good fuel mileage I think. That was 17.3 at the fill up, so that's... 25.78 mpg?

 

its "check gage" ... should be top center in your cluster cause mine has it

 

Ive never driven mine till the light comes on i dont like to let it go past a 1/4 of a tank so i cannot accurately tell how long till you earn dumb a$$ status on the side of the Interstate waiting for a gas can

 

Same here (except for the, "...middle of nowhere and it was around 3 am" part). The light is on way before the needle hits empty. Use it as a reminder that you're getting low on fuel, not that you're out.

 

Can't say i've ever tried to see how far I could go, I ran into a stiff head wind last year towing, and I put 29 gallons in my 30 gallon tank in the f150, that was too close for comfort considering it was 3am and -15 degrees out...

 

I've pushed it 30 miles, then i start to get that feeling in my legs that i'm going to be walking soon. I would like to push it more, but is it bad for the truck?

 

i thought 4 quarts was a gallon, 4 liters would be more wouldnt it? it would be more like 6 liters......i could be wrong, ****, once again i was responding to the last post on first page, diddnt realize there was 2 pages

 

Hmmm, I know I've ran my truck to the bottom of the red before, then put 15.6 gallons in a 16 gallon? tank.

But, I don't think I have a light anyways :)

 

I've never let it go that low in my truck, although it is only 9months (and 6k miles) old.

however, in my old explorer (which had the 4.0L SOHC) I made it about 40 miles once the light came on, before I gave in and filled up.

 

My CHECK GAUGES light in the Ranger seems to turn on when the needle is ON E... I'm always paranoid that I'm gonna run out of gas on the road. I've only gone 5 miles with the light on.

 

Ive never had my light go on, Im paranoid to burn out my fuel pump so I fill up usually at a half tank...

 

This tank would probably have been over 375 before the light came on - I filled up @ 345 miles, but the needle was barely below the 1/4 mark. I got 28 MPG on this tank, mostly highway miles.

 

My light comes on around 380-420 miles, and I put another 40 or so miles on it with the light on, and thats 14.8 gallons at fill up. I just fill up whenever I get around to it after the light is on. Most I've ever put in my truck was 15.2 gallons, with a 16 gallon tank.

 

3.8 liters = 1 U.S Gallon (Found on Wiki answers...I didn't know either!)

 

my truck gets me to the nearest gas station when the light comes on...

I usually fill the truck at 200 miles or a 1/4 tank. a few months back I was down near E and I actually ran out of gas when I parked on a hill. I went back out and she wouldnt start.

 

i just wanna add that dont you think that the check gauge light is a little redundant in its self?

i dont know about anyone else but i kinda always look at my gauges ya know let me know if im gettin hot what my tach is reading my speed and most importantly ( well second most important next to speed) is GAS

but me i dont know i have ( had) the 3.0 and i filled up in tampa and made it all the way down to "the red garter" in Key West < perv much but thats about 450 miles and i was doin about 65 mph average with about 500 pounds in the bed and another 300 in the cab and i still had enough gas the next morning with out putting gas in it to drive back up to tav town (still in the keys) i can honestly say i have never ran out of gas in my ranger

 

If i've done alot of freeway driving on a tank, I can go like 40 miles after the CG light comes on. And that's 40 speedometer miles uncorrected for the lift and tires, so it's probably more like 45-48 real miles.

God knows how long I could go after 100% freeway. Probably like 80 miles or something ridiculous lol

 

the owners manual says for a 3.0L 4x2 says the fuel tank cap. is 19 or 19.5 gals. including the reserve. When I fill up the truck from 1/4 tank it takes 16 16.5 gals. so we have 3 to 3.5 gals of reserve. How far can you get on 3 gals of gas?

 

When I lived out in the country the closest gas station was like 15 miles. It was late the station was closed so I drove home and the light came on partway home. I hoped I could make it back to town the next day. I actually ran out of gas a few blocks away from the station and coasted to the pump! lol Luckily there was no one in my way otherwise I would have been pushing!

I just looked at my owners manual. It doesn't say what the reserve is.
It does say the the fuel tank capacity is 16.5 gal for a regular cab (short W/B)
and 20.0 gal for regular cab (long W/B) I have an ext cab. so guess it's the long W/B.
The few time I've run it down far enough to turn on the CG light it took about
17-17.5 gal to fill it up. So assume the reserve is about 2.5 gal.
This varies from truck to truck. So figure it out for YOUR truck.
If you get, let's say 16 mpg around town, you're looking at ABOUT 40 miles to a dry tank.
If you get 22 on the hwy, then it would be ABOUT 53 miles to a dry tank.
(16 X 2.5 = 40) (22 X 2.5 = 53)
It doesn't matter what someone else is getting. Do the math for YOUR truck.

On another note. If you run low from time to time, no big deal.
But if you ROUTINELY run your truck on fumes, YOU WILL burn up the fuel pump.
I rarely go below 1/4 tank. Just my $.02

 

my old chevy used to add gas to the tank after it was parked lol... it didnt have a light but when it started bobbing below the opening (half moon style gauges) id have about 30 miles.. never let the ranger get that low, but most cars have 2 gallons left when the light comes on, so that means id make it an average of... 34 or 35 miles in a mix of city/hwy

 

LOL, I always thought that too. They Fixed it in 2004. I had a Cartoon Gas pump jump up when I was low. I never put more than 14 gallons in any ranger I have ever owned, But my Explorer (2000) had a 21 gallon tank and the one time it came on, I put in 19.5 gallons.

the pump is cooled by the liquid it pumps not by being surrounded by the fuel
