i know this probably has been asked a hundred times, but is this legal in california?

It's one of those rear window graphics where you can see out, but the outside can't look in. I think it would match my mud flaps and the rim of my bed awesome :)

Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle?
The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:

1. The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.
2. If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.

 

To add to Mike's post.......... in Cali you cannot:

Apply anything to the sides or forward of the driver that changes the color of the glass or reduces the transmittance of light.

That said, you may paint all of the other window black (Who would?) as long as there is a side mirror on the passenger side. (Driver's side is always required.)
