I know this is a dead deal here being it's over a year old, but I just pulled the motor from my 2001 4.0 SOHC Ranger XLT 4x4 - Auto Trans - and guess what, NO BALANCE SHAFT. I bought the truck brand new with 7 miles on it so I know it's the original engine. Go figure.

My 2004 XLT 4WD Didn’t have a balance shaft either. That is not what all my research led me to believe. I had to return parts.

I had to return the balance shaft parts too. No big deal though. It turns out it was mostly the early 4.0 SOHC engines in 4WD Explorers that had the balance shaft. It is possible that a few 2001 Rangers also got them, but I have yet to hear of a 2002 or later with it.
