Ranger
Ranger
So i just got my 2002 4.0 automatic Ranger 4x4 in October 2021. Its been a good little truck so far. The only thing im concerned about is the tranny. About 2 months after i got it, the tranny wouldn't really shift right and the over drive light flashed. It has only done it one time though. But here's why im actually writing this. So when i try to floor it it will rap out to 6 grand rpms and when i let off it will be fine. Im not sure if theres a sensor or governor type deal going on or its just my tranny is bad. But it shifts great other than when i try to floor it. What does anyone else think??

5r55e Tranny is a NotoriousFailureItem; could be one or more specific items.
How many miles on Truck\Engine\Tranny?
Has Tranny ever had basic service: fresh ATF, new Filter, Band adjust...?
Have you read the OBD2 TroubleCodes for the Tranny; blinking OD Lamp means there are Tranny TroubleCodes?
Need an OBD2 Scanner that reads both StandardSAE & ProprietaryFord TroubleCodes+Data; click here for more info.
As a first LastDitchEffort to save Tranny, I'd do this:
~ Drop TrannyPan, Drain 5~7qts of old ATF, remove old Filter.
~ Drop ValveBody, install new SolenoidSet & BondedGasket & ServoGasket+ORings.
~ ReInstall ValveBody, torq+sequence VB Bolts to spec.
~ Inspect+Adjust Intermediate+OverDrive Bands.
~ Install new Filter, new PanGasket, reinstall Pan, torq PanBolts to spec, refill with fresh MerconV.
~ Drive 50miles+ then HandPump ~1qt ATF from DipTube, refill with fresh MerconV; do this 6~7 times to fully flush+renew ATF.
If this does not help, likely need a rebuild or new Tranny.

Sounds to me like your torque converter may be going out. Does it lag going into drive or reverse if it sits for a day or more? I'm also agreeing with others on the fact that you may need a full tranny service with filter. It's easy to do all yourself. Lastly, check your fluid level.
