So my 15 year old wants to buy a 2000 Ranger and make it into a pre-runner. He’s looking at a 2wd 4 cylinder basic stock model as it will leave him more $$ for things like suspension, tires, etc.

I know very little about Rangers, is this a good year/model for a pre runner? If so what kind of options are out there that a teenager (and Dad) could DIY?

 

I don't know everything about prerunners, but from what I understand they usually incorporate completely redesigned and usually custom fabricated suspensions. Since you are already looking at loads of welding, it seems like any base truck could "work". The difference is, some frames will require much less work and money than others.
I would highly suggest looking at what trucks are commonly used to build prerunner setups. Specifically, read some build logs. It's a great way to get an idea of what's required and what you will be looking for in a good prerunner base.
I'm not an expert, but I would expect the ranger isn't very high on the list of trucks that can be easily built into a prerunner.
I go through suspension and drive line components at the rate most people go through oil filters. The ranger is a great truck but when you beat on it things break. At least that's been my experience.
