that makes more sense.. i would learn how to wrench, it would have saved you easily a grand right there, and most of those things you listed, atleast on a ranger, are real easy.

Thats how all vehicles get, when do you stop dumping money into them and just cut your losses??? I know I ditched my ranger cause it needed head gaskets and the tranny was on the way out. Probably my fault on the tranny for towing way to much with it way to often. A week after I traded it in, it was in the shop for head gaskets and im not sure about the tranny though....

If you want to start cutting costs down, learn how to wrench. Either that or stop wheelin.

The drive shaft is causing the noise, either get one from superlift, or go get one custom made.
my front DS is a superlift shaft, I blew my stock shaft thousands of miles ago. I have play in my front pinion yoke though. Parked with brakes on I can turn my front shaft a fair amount.

I can wrench, but it's hard to when you don't have the tools, space, or money for either.

What are you going to get for your truck? Next to nothing. Then you will be in debt, and have no way out. Just my opinion, but what is the harm in letting the truck sit for a few months while you get funds?
Get some old POS for a grand, and drive that while saving up the money

I'll second the money into vehicle part. I'm at 87k and owe 1600 on my loan. If I get this job at Sandia I'll be starting at least at 58.6k

Its always tough with vehicles cause no matter how much work you put into them they still decrease in value. If the ranger is paid off, how much can you get for selling it? How much to fix it? Do you throw it in the back yard, until some day down the road you have the cash to turn it into a trail rig? All tough decisions and in the end it all comes down to money and what you want to do.

How 4500? Thats pretty good, I'll admit it.

But think if the amount of work you have put into it. ANd when was the last time you saw a SASed ranger on the trail?

I agree. Keep it and fix it and get ya some pos car or truck to drive around while ya fix the truck. Make the pos your daily even after the truck is fixed and just keep the truck for wheeling.

goes by the amount in of the increase in fuel mileage..

i know i have a ton of time and money into it.. but i hate driving a piece.

i don't know what the **** to do, I'm in a hole either way. a 4.0 and trans out of a ranger/explorer can't be too expensive, but at the same time i want to start over, part of me says not to, part says to.

Hey Matt, when you blew your CVs where'd you get the replacements? I remember that was right around the time you ditched the RCD and went SAS.

Also, just mentioned the post to my GF as she was curious as to what I was doing. She reminded me that we were also 300 miles from home when my hub assembly went. We just moved to Albuquerque from Las Cruces, NM. It blew on june 26 when we were on our way to Walmart for cleaning supplies so we could get our deposit back on the house we were renting.

If ya do the 4.0 you could go newer and ditch the OHV completely. Then again, if you do that you face the weak point in the slave cylinder should you go manual trans behind the SOHC.

Find a junked ranger/exploder with a good running motor. Take the motor and trans, then part the rest out if you have the patience. You could make your money back.

Pick up a used ranger with the new 2.3L engine and a 5sp in it for a dd and fix the thing. I used to have an '01 and I could get 24-34 mpg in that thing.

Either that or pick up a honda/toyota with 120k+ on it for a little bit of nothing.

I dont think you could trade in your truck and get the 4500 to put towards a JK.

I thought the bill was your current vehicle had to get under 18mpg, and the new car had to be over 22mpg or something like that, and anything over that, the money you get adjusts for it up to 4500 of course.
I might be wrong though!

and after reading through the link you have,
it says it has to be drivable, and they dont go by your actual milage, but epa estimated milage, Which is still probably under the limit.

it drives, i drove it an hour home. I cant get a JK with it, so I'm gonna look at some other fuel sipping car. I need to go talk to a salesman i know and get the full story.

the epa **** says rangers combined mileage is 16.1
