Replacement fuel pump for 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 4x4 3.0 V6 Flex Fuel
Does anyone have a link to good, reliable fuel pump for a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge (69K miles, yes, that is all) 4x4 3.0L V6 Flex Fuel? If I buy one, will the dealer install? I don't have the knowledge or tools to install and everyday I regret this more and more. $900+ a LOT of $$ to me! Doing some research after the fact seems like 2002 was not one of the better years for Rangers.

I think most people will tell you to stick with the OEM part when it comes to fuel pumps. Looks like the flex fuel part # is MOTORCRAFT PFS438. It's $366.89 on rockauto.com. If you can't install this yourself I would not take it to a dealer. Any fairly competent mechanic should be able to do the work much cheaper. The hardest part is that you need to take the bed off. Sometimes those bed bolts are so rusted that you need to buy new bolts. Before you do all that make sure you really do have a bad fuel pump. Check the fuses, replace the fuel filter, have a mechanic check the fuel pressure, etc.

Yes, +1 on the Motorcraft fuel pump
And yes, call around, see what other shops will charge to install if they provide the Motorcraft fuel pump , and then ask price if YOU provide the Motorcraft fuel pump for them to install
If a shop does everything they will warranty the pump THEY supplied
If a shop just does the labor then they will not warranty the pump, of course

beaterpc, thanks for the reply. not 100% sure it's a fuel pump and at $900+ for dealer install would like to rule out other things. checked fuses, relays and inertia switch. test light shows they are ok. fuel pressure is good when it is running. very weird problem. it will crank, start and run fine for days and then just out of the blue one morning it won't start, just cranks. this is the weirdest part, when i get so fed up that i call a tow truck to tow it to the dealers, it will start and the dealer wont be able to get it to fail. i can leave it at the dealers for days and they check it every morning and it will start. so i drive it back home, run it for several days and it will eventually quit starting again, maddening. i swear to god, i can't take much more of it. i am afraid to drive it out of town. maybe about 100 lbs. of tannerite will do the trick.

When its working listen for the fuel pump when you turn on the key, it runs for 2 seconds only but does that every time you turn the key on
So repeat the on and off as much as you need until you KNOW what the fuel pump sounds like
Then.................next no start see if the fuel pump is coming on or not

Then either the the computer is not activating it or pump is failing
The computer(PCM) grounds the Fuel Pump Relay in the engine fuse box for 2 seconds when it boots up
Fuse pump relay is just a standard automotive relay so you can swap it around with another relay
But, 2002 has a Fuel Pump reset LIGHT on the dash, looks like a gas pump with a line thru it, page 8 of owners manual
Download manuals here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/
Computer monitors voltage to fuel pump at the inertia switch, Fuel Cut off switch
If fuel pump relay wasn't working then Computer would turn on this light and set a code, so with key on the dash does a Bulb Test, see if the Fuel Pump reset LIGHT BULB is working
If computer was the problem then it would because it doesn't "think" fuel pump needs to be on, lol
But extreme long shot on that
Next no start you can tap on the gas tank or slam the door, that can get an electric motor(fuel pump) working again, if that works then yes pump is failing
If this is the case it will just stop working one day and won't come back on

You can buy just the pump, or the whole assembly
Sock comes separate and only needs to be changed if old one is damaged, its just a screen filter it doesn't wear out
Retaining ring can be broken if removed incorrectly, and can be bought separately
In some older years the sock could rust out(poor choice of metal), and the metal retaining ring wouldn't come off so had to be cut off, plastic retaining rings usually come off fine
In the older years a "kit" often came with pump/assembly and sock and retaining ring because of this
2002 didn't have those issues

thank you ron. hoping to get this resolved soon. found a good site for Ford fuel pump problems. lots of people had issues with inertia switch where vehicle would die while running. haven't had that problem (knocking on wood).
