i have a 1997 ford ranger... and i want to know how hard it would be fo take the motor, trans, wiring harness, and turbo setup out of a second gen rx7 and put it in my ranger? if any one knows someone thats done it or knows how hard it would be, could you E-mail me at Rich93ds@gmail.com, and the ranger has a 2.3L with a 5-Spd trans.

 

100% custom fab...takes alot of time and engineering. but it can be done...idk why but you would. a 5.0L from a mustang would be a heck of alot faster and easier to install

what its easy as pie man. if you have everything and the motor is ready and you have the install kit its a weekend job thats it...

 

I'd love to have a 5.0 In my ranger. I've got the 2.5L and man oh man would I enjoy it, can't afford it though but damn would that be sweet.

 

It would be difficult, but damn would it be neat. My 83 RX7 (12A Motor) is really quick (well compared to my 4x4). If you've got the time and know-how, I would deffinately do it. Originality is priceless.

 

You would gain maybe 30hp and 0 torque (for a 13B engine) over what you have now. There are many engines that would go in much much easier and much cheaper.

I feel your pain with that 2.3L...but I'm swapping in a 4.0L SOHC in two weeks

 

were could i get the 5.0 kit and would it work in a 99

I believe they are all wheel drive so your truck would need to be a 4x4. Or get a different tranny and possible a new driveshaft (custom).



I thought the rotary engine really didnt come alive till they were twin turbo.

My buddy has three RX7's and they all have major problems starting. The only thing decent about them is, a regualar motor kindof plateaus in horsepower at a certain rpm. Wenkels will keep increasing in power until the motor explodes. There still is no reason in my opinion to put one in a truck

A friend of mine has a genII RX7 turbo B13 rotary drivetrain shoehorned into a 1999 Miata. Hes currently making 290+ rwhp.. its a fast car. He did alot of fabrication, I'm sure there'd be even more to put it into a truck.. i.e., lenghtening/adapting the driveshaft, motor mounts, etc., but that said, that motor is terribly unsuited for a truck. Big, heavy trucks need torque, and rotaries ain't got it!

Rotataries suck from what I've heard. They don't make ANY torque, not very reliable, and they burn a lot of oil.

 

Well they burn oil inherently, like a 2-stroke. I LOVE my RX7. Very quick compared to my Ranger. And its got enough torque/HP for what its propelling around, yaknow?

a weekend job after finding a new tranny, engine, transfer case(unless 2wd) for some reason the transfer case cant hold it

 

you didnt hardly read everything i wrote i sayed "WHEN YOU HAVE EVERYTHING...." read one more time. and if you do your HOMEWORK there is a transfer case that WILL hold and work fine...have fun finding it its out there...

 

There are kits available for the 302 swap for both 2wd and 4x4 rangers. The kit includes all mounts, new radiator and wiring. I believe it was approx. $650. All you need is a 302/trans, which are a dime a dozen anymore. Not that much of a job, all the hard stuff is done for you in the kit.

 

I would like to see this kit you speak of.

 

The better of the kits available is made by Allstar performance. I was wrong on the wiring, the kit comes with a new radiator, oilpan, all brackets, oil filter re-locater and the headers. Not sure if this will work, but try the link below:

I could've swore this has already been done. I thought someone took a motor out of a supra and put it into their ranger. I could be wrong though. Supras do have rotories, don't they? I know nothing abuot iomports.

 

I thought the Supras were a v-6 twin turbo, but not sure if all the years were the same.

 

Supra MKIV's (1993.5-1997?) are Inline 6 Twin Turbo (2JZGTE, IIRC) engine, Supra MKIII's (???-1993.5) are Inline 6 Single Turbo...Supra's do not have rotories.

I'm sure it could be done, but if you don't already have the fab skills to do it without asking, you'd probably be hard pressed to be able to do it.

 

The supra was actually an I-6, N/A or Twin Turbo depending on the model you got. Supras never had rotaries. The older model supras did look like older model RX7s, which might be why you thought the supra had a rotary.

Either way, the RX7 with the LS1 makes me happy in my pants

 

I knew they were 6-cyl, but didn't realize that they were I-6's. Ford has a I-5 engine that hopefully makes it into the rangers before they are discontinued. That would be a much better alternative than the 2.3L.
