Hello I'm fairly new to the forums and I have a 98 bone stock ford ranger 4.0L 4x4 and I have been experiencing terrible mileage

I get about 9-11 mpg city.

I Don't drive the best but not nearly bad enough to get this kind of mpg compared to what some of you guys say you get.

I just had my oil changed and my filters cleaned 2k miles ago, and the transmission serviced.

Any tips? Thanks.

Pull out a couple of spark plugs and see what the tips tell you.

Light brown/white electrode means good burn is happening

Darker brown/blackish means Rich burn

You want to find out if you are burning the fuel or if it is leaking out.

That low MPG should show very dark spark plugs if you are burning that extra fuel

 

9-11mpg, ouch that is low, I just did the math today and I've been getting 20mpg city on my 2000 3.0L v6*

*city as in driven short distances mainly at highway speeds. I have a lead foot and tend to drive 70MPH otherwise I probably could get more out of a standard tank of gas.


Have you tried replacing your O2 sensors / fuel filter? Don't know how many miles you've got on your truck, but I'm willing to bet for a 98 it couldn't hurt to replace those items anyway.

 

You can also fill the tires to 40lbs. It will help the gas mileage. Less resistance.
