Transmission cooler

Hey all,

2005 Edge 3.0, auto, rwd. I'm preparing for a long drive, and want to install a transmission cooler. (If memory serves, the 2005 gets a 5r55e, right?) Does anyone recommend a particular brand or model?

Thanks for any and all help!

2005 3.0 has the 5R44E. Only the 4.0 received the 5R55E.

Does your truck not already have the transmission cooler mounted in front of the A/C condenser?

Factory stock TransCooler for the 5r55e\5r44e, bolts to right front of RadiatorSupportFrame.
You'll need to track down stock fittings+tubes that go with it & decide on bypassing\using a RadiatorSideTankExchanger.

Thanks for the feedback! (Good to know it's a 5r44e - what is the difference between that and the 5r55e? Torque input? Structure? Both?) My truck already has the stock cooler, I just was under the impression from poking around on the internet that a second one is a good idea for hot summer mountain driving.

Mainly torque rating (not sure which internal parts achieve it) due to the 4.0 being a little snappier. That and the bellhousing. Otherwise, they both have many of the same parts.

Ahhh gotcha. I've heard of people running two coolers but have no experience with it. I plan on looking for a bigger one for my 2002 Ranger, depending on what I see for trans temps.

Also, you want the fluid to go through the aux cooler/s first, then through the one built into the radiator, you don't want to get the transmission fluid to cold.

Still running original 2001 V6~4.0L~SOHC Engine + 5r55e Trans here;
replaced factory 2RowPlasticTankedRadiator with a 4RowAllAluminumRadiator a while back.
If you live in AK\MN\MT\WY..., keep RadiatorExchanger in loop; if in AZ\FL\NM\NV\TX\UT... it's need is debatable.
Then added 2nd stock TransCooler, mounted left MirrorImaged & hosed parallel with original;
used 10mmID StainlessBarbedTees bought off Amazon + 10mmID StandardOil+HydraulicHose + DoubledUpWormClamps.
Trans consistently runs <170f in hottest conditions, so I'm happy. Do occasional lite mountain\desert towing.

Thanks for the responses! Those are definitely helpful, I'll keep them in mind. So basically, whatever the setup,

Fwiw, I live on Vancouver Island (BC) but am moving east, where it should get much colder. What was the purpose of the Tee-connector?

Thanks for the tips!

My setup is Original+2nd TransCoolers hosed in PARALLEL (not in SERIES); two 10mmID StainlessBarbedTees needed.
Doubles fluid residence time & maximizes cooling, compared to single\series TransCoolers.
