1996 Ford Ranger XLT 3.04X4 Need help with PATS system
I got about 10 miles away from my house and shut my car off all the way before I realized that I didn’t have the keys in the car (I am able to start my car without the keys) I tried Hot wiring it because I figured that since my car is a POS anyways it shouldn’t be hard to hotwire it right? Obviously I was wrong and the alarm system went off and the car wouldn’t crank, I reset the alarm by putting the key in the lock and turning it for 30 seconds and the truck will now crank but it isn’t starting, I have determined that it is because it is not getting spark. If there’s anything I can do to reset the pets system other than turning the key on and off for eight seconds like the Internet said please let me know because my truck is stuck in a parking lot on a very main road
Welcome to the forum
The good news is you do not have PATS in a 1996 Ranger, it was first offered as an option in 1998 V6 Rangers then became standard on 1999 and up
Alarm systems did often disable starter motor operation with a relay, and some times fuel pump operation with a relay, no alarm system disabled spark
Do you have Keyless Entry(fobs)?
Ford alarms usually only came with power door locks and power window option vehicles, with keyless entry RAP module
If not you could have a 3rd Party alarm, does the alarm activate the Ford horn or is there a separate siren?
Separate siren means 3rd party
So a check list
When you turn on the key does the CEL(check engine light) come on?
It should, this means computer is booted up, if not then blown fuse or bad PCM relay
When you crank the engine, CEL should go OFF, this means computer is getting a timing signal from Crank sensor, and it will start spark and fuel injectors
No timing signal and no spark or fuel injectors
When you turn on the key you should HEAR the fuel pump in the gas tank run for 2 seconds
It's not quiet, a HUMMMM from behind the cab
Repeat key off then on as much as you need to to see if you hear it or don't
Only way to "test spark" on a Waste Spark system, is the 50/50 test
Spray fuel, gasoline or ether, into the engine
Try to start engine
If it starts and dies spark is OK but fuel delivery is not
If it does not start, or fire, then spark is not working
50/50 instant results
