2003 Ranger pwr window malfunction

Hi all,
My 2003 ranger has an intermittent window problem, affecting both windows. Sometimes they work normally, and other times when either switch is actuated in either direction, the relay by the gas pedal starts buzzing like mad, and neither window will operate. The relay will generally continue buzzing, messing with the switches might make it stop, or it will stop if the key is shut off, or the relay removed and re-installed. The windows may operate normally after R&R the relay, or they might not. Has anyone had a similar issue?
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum

No, have not read about that issue, so not common

There are two power window relays in that relay box above gas pedal
Safety relay, that powers both door switches
One touch relay, that is only used for drivers door window

I can't see the One Touch relay effecting passenger side window switch, could effect Master but not passenger door switch itself
Safety relay issue would effect both switches

The Drivers door Master switch is the most common failure point, just gets used the most, simple as that
I would start there, replace it

Second most common issue is the wiring in drivers door, in the rubber boot where the wires are bent back and forth each time door opens and closes

2002 wiring is the same as 2003, diagram below

Power windows in all vehicles work the same way
Window motor is a DC motor with 2 wires, send it 12v on one wire and Ground the other wire and window goes UP, reverse the polarity 12v/ground to ground/12v and window goes down

The switches GROUND both motor wires when not in use
When you press a button ONE WIRE is ungrounded and then connected to 12volts so motor activates because the other wire is still a grounded
Master switch has the only Ground wire in the system
It grounds the passenger side switch and its 2 motor wires, thats how the Master can control both driver's and passenger side window motors

Master and passenger side switch each have a 12volt wire, from Safety Relay, so passenger side switch can work on its own as long as Master is still grounding it

Well, it appears as though the new driver side window switch was the issue. I replaced it, and the system seems to be operating fine. Thank you for the help!

"New" now means NEVER EVER TESTED

New no longer means tested and works
