High pitched whine coming from trans area...

As I was getting in my truck this morning at the grocery store I noticed a high pitched whine coming from behind the engine. I immediately thought exhaust, but when I got home I tested it by plugging the exhaust with some rags- no change. I got under the truck by the drivers side trans area and the whine was much more prominent. The whine follows the revs, if that helps any. Also, I had the clutch and slave done about 5,000 miles ago.

Google doesn't seem to be much help, all I get is help for automatics....

Can you apply light pressure to the clutch pedal and see what happens?

No cover, so that a negative. Belt and pulleys are clean. Took it to the shop, my mechanic is suspecting a throw-out bearing, but told me to come back when the whine is louder...

I'm changing my guess to being low on trans fluid. I need to get new drain and fill plugs for when I change the fluid next. Anyone know the part numbers for those two items? I've tried fordparts and fordpartsgiant and nothing.

Well, it's not the trans fluid being low. I topped it off yesterday (there was a leak from the drain plug not being on fully tight) and it actually made the whine more noticeable. Back to square one.

Well, I found a good deal on a trans from a '99 4.0/4x4. Getting it sometime next week, it's coming from Ohio. It was $600 shipped and about $600 to get it put in. So instead of over $2000 being dropped, it'll be close to $1300. The info on the trans said it only had 69,5xx miles on it, so I thought that was pretty good.

According to TRS forums, the transmissions will interchange. I just had an "OH ****" moment when you said that. I didnt even think about that when I bought it.
