ABS light illuminates on my 93 when you key on. It goes out after a few seconds. I checked under my hood for the abs pump. I cant find it? So if i dont have an ABS truck what is the light for? Its a 93

Yes, you have rear ABS

Follow the FRONT brake line on the Master down into the drivers side frame rail, you will see the rear ABS unit there

Looks like this: https://mundorepuesto.com/imgparts/p...1C/12-2028.jpg

Only way dirtier, lol

Many pickup trucks got rear ABS in the 1980's, same as motorcycles got front ABS, just makes sense

4 wheel ABS was an option in Rangers starting in 1995

Is there any way to test its operation without doing a panic stop??? Can I douse my rear wheels in vegetable oil and hit the brakes decently hard?

Gravel road works fine

But at least one rear wheel will STILL lock up, sometimes both
There is just one ABS sensor on the differential, so a single axle/wheel can lock up without ABS "kicking in"
You should feel a pulsing in the brake pedal if the ABS module is reducing pressure to the rear wheel cylinders

so today i tested my abs in the snow. I got up to abou10-15 mph, nothing crazy, then stomped on the clutch and brake. wheels all locked up. no pulsing in the brake pedal!! I thought i had abs?

If all the wheels locked up, the ABS doesn't detect different speeds from the other wheels so it assumes you came to a complete stop.

For ABS to work it has to detect rolling wheels and locked up wheels at the same time.

Also ABS may not work at that low of speed.

+1 ^^^^

If you just have rear ABS then the ABS should have pulsed a bit with sudden reduction in axle speed, but not sure if 10-15mph would be enough of the change

If you have 4WABS then yes if front wheel sensors and rear axle sensor all stopped spinning at the same time(4 wheel lockup) then no difference in speed so no ABS
The front wheel ABS system can reduce lockup of one front wheel, the pulsing
The rear wheels just have the one axle sensor so one wheel can still lock up without triggering ABS
