aftermarket starter help!

i put in an aftermart starter but it has a mind of its own trys to start without a key disable the battery. it seems like i had an internal short from the terminal post on startrer i shaved off as mush as i can so it dont touch anything elese, but then i had a not start but after messing with the starter it seemed ok. basically it seems inconsistant, i had to cut and solder the wire then drimp as instructed the the second it a huge plate and thats where i think the problem is.

can some one shed some light on this i need a rack so i can get a better look but help me im new to this website and i would appreciate help, im helping as much as i can to others

i have 3.0L 2004 ranger edge package 2wd

2004 starter motor will have starter relay built in.

So there will be one larger cable going from battery + to the larger terminal on the starter.
Start will not spin with this cable connected, if it does then you have a bad relay in the starter motor or you have hooked it up wrong.

This is a picture of a starter motor with built in relay: http://www.retro-ford.co.uk/shop/sit..._full/Z020.JPG

You will see a larger terminal with no cable attached, that is where battery + cable goes.
NOT to the other larger terminal that already has cable attached.

Then you see a smaller terminal, that is the "S" terminal, there should be a Red/blue stripe wire that connects to the smaller terminal.
That wire comes from the Key switch, it will have 12volts when key is turned all the way to START, that activates the relay and sends power to starter motor.
