The vacuum control unit is in the dash. When you are turning the **** to "MAX A/C" or "VENT" you are using it. Ford calls it an "A/C Heater Function Selector Vacuum Valve" which you can see in the diagram.

 

I wanted to thank all the participants in this thread. I had the exact problem with my 2005 Ranger. After a quick inspection I found a very small crack in a very small hose that i would have never found without knowing what to look for. Thanks again, you saved me a lot of time and money and most of all aggravation.

Ok I'm resurrecting this thread because I can't seem to find where the leak is on my 2000 Ranger, 2.5L. All vents work propertly except the recirulation door will not open when turned to Max A/C. Cold air blows out all the correct vents etc.

I hear a hissing sound coming from the A-C heater selection function valve only when either "Max AC" or "off" is selected. I tried replacing the fuction selector valve but I still hear the hissing with a new valve in there. It's not the recirculation door vacuum motor because I tried replacing that with no success. The vacuum hose that connects to the recirculation door vacuum motor does have some vacuum on it, but not enough to run the motor.

I am guessing there is a leak somewhere, but have know idea where. I looked at the lines under the hood that connect to the black ball and they look fine. black plastic ball looks fine. Any ideas???

 

Trace that hose all the way back.

 

The white hose that connects to the vacuum motor runs behind the glove box and into the firewall. Not sure where it goes from there, and everything under the hood looks fine.

 

I believe the white vacuum line tees off and goes back through the firewall changing to a gray colored vacuum line going to the hot water valve that’s inline with one of the heater core hoses on the passenger’s side of the engine (Ref post 28 above).

 

So i noticed my Ranger started to do this to. I read through this thread and looked for a broken vacume line. i think i found one but not sure where it goes.
This is close to the place i found it.

I found the other end and that is where it goes. Can i splice it back together or do i have to get a new hose? and where would i get one? thanks

 

You can splice it by just trimming the ends to clean it up, then putting regular vac line over the ends to fill the gap.

any auto parts store, they sell it by the foot. I would suggest that when you trim up the ends, you cut off a little bit to take with you so you get the size line that fits snug around the plastic line.

i wish i was still in school and had access to a smoke machine right about now



but anyways, +1 RF thanks. the parts store told me it was the blend door actuator, this saved me $40 possibly

 

hmmm im in college right now ill have to take a look at this ive got the same problem air only blows through my top vents.... bought my truck that way..

 

I can add a little more to this thread based on some first-hand experience. I had been having trouble for a some time with my Ranger's climate control system, the function selector would work fine in all modes except FLOOR. When I would set it to FLOOR the system would default directly to DEFROST. In other words, I had "a partial leak affecting only that part of the vacuum circuit".

So today I did a little troubleshooting and after a few minutes of snooping around, I found that the Yellow vacuum hose had been completely knocked off the PANEL/FLOOR vacuum door motor (which is located underneath the dash, above the gas pedal toward the center, tucked behind a small support brace).

There is a also a Blue vacuum hose connected to the same vacuum door motor, and it too was rather loosely connected. So I quickly put both hoses back on good and tight, then fired up the climate control system, and you guessed - problem fixed! It was as easy as that.

Refreshing this thread because I have the same issue.

All of a sudden air stopped coming from the "face vents" on my husband's 2002 Ranger XLT (3.0L V6 2WD). (Blows from defrost vents and feet vents). Have read enough on here to know it had to do with the vacuum reservoir (black sphere) or one of the vacuum lines. Immediately found that one of the two black vacuum lines coming off of the sphere has been severed. Also found a severed grey vacuum line the same size coming off a part of the engine that I can't name.

Should we splice these two together? We can't see any other severed lines viewing from above but I haven't gotten on the ground and looked up from underneath the engine.

We did find a black walnut (still in it's "fruit") hanging out in the engine compartment so I might know what kind of rodent severed the wires...
