Anyone ever done a 4.6 swap?
Anyone ever done a 4.6 swap?
Had a 4.6 from a crown vic drop in my lap and im considering putting it in my 3.0. just curious if anyone knows what all i would be looking at mount, transmission swap wise if i decide to go through with it.
You will have a big issue with the height of the 4.6l and the width
The 302/5.0l OHV V8 is 19" wide and barely fits between steering shaft and Heater box in a Ranger, this was/is the popular V8 explorer swap
Its also 20" tall
4.6l is 26" wide and 26" tall(SOHC), 30" for 4.6l DOHC model, DOHC is also 30" wide
So you would need to find 3.5" on each side of the engine bay at firewall(SOHC), so steering shaft will need to be move over and some kind of universal setup added, and who needs a heater, or AC, lol
Extra height can be done with body lift, suspension lift won't help, but............that's like 6"+
Exhaust would have to be on the outside of frame rail, but great for side pipes
It would not be a simple swap
Crown Vic 4.6l is rated at 210HP to 250HP, and weighs about 650lbs dressed, 302/5.0l weighs 475lbs dressed, Explorer 5.0l OHV is 215HP
You can easily match or surpass that 250HP with an "on the cheap side" built 302/5.0l and that fits in a Ranger, lol, and is a way more reliable engine, IMO
