2008 Ranger V6 4.0L 4x4 sport m/t 152,000km

Last Friday, I was in a bad jam, and unwisely put 10-15L of gas from a Jerry can at work into truck. As soon as I pulled out of the yard, poor Betsy wanted to throw up. Rpms going from 900-1500, hesitant throttle response. I made it about 10 blocks to a grocery store and a co-worker kindly put an additional ~25L into my tank. Significant difference afterwards.

Question time:

Obviously crap old fuel. What is my next step?
Fuel injector cleaner, replacing fuel filter, and even drain the tank was suggested. I'd appreciate any unbiased advice, keeping in mind I'm very budget restricted at the moment.

Yes, gasoline can remain stable for about 5 months in a sealed container, after that it starts to become "less potent"

Add some Octane Boost, just 1 can, its ethanol which can combine with any water in the tank, and also raise octane of deteriorated gasoline so it can pass thru the engine better
Also use at least 10% ethanol regular gas for the next few tanks, "winter fuel" is usually at least 10% ethanol

Change the fuel filter in a month or so, they are cheap

Fuel injector cleaner is OK to use, Seafoam works pretty well, but not for this issue, just good to use once a year

Bad gas is low octane with high water content
All gas has water in it
Gas and water can't bond/mix
Water is heavier than gas
So the longer a can of gas sits the more water collects at the bottom of the can
So never use the last bit of gas in a can, just dump it

Ethanol CAN bond with water, and does, this does two things
It allows the water to pass through the engine without misfires
It raise the freezing point of water, so any water in the fuel lines can't freeze in temps below 32degF, which is why "winter fuel" has higher ethanol content
