Cruise won't work. Suspect the brake light switch, Can I just clean it.

Hello All,

I know I am cheap but that is who I am. My cruise did not work today, I performed the cruise system check and got 2 flashes that indicate the brake position switch or clutch switch.

The brake lights work and the clutch pedal switch works as well as you have to press down to get the car started. I read that the brake switch is likely a 2 stage with the Cruise cut off being the first one. My question is if I can just clean the switch does that have a good chance to work or am I just wasting time and should just buy a new switch and put it in.

Thanks.

The brake pedal switch is 2 switches internally, one just does brake lights, the other is a sensor used for detecting "foot on brake" for cruise, ABS, 4x4, shifter unlock(automatic)

That's why switch has more than just 2 wires

Depending on the YEAR of the Ranger the sensor can be a Ground when activated(foot off pedal) and 12v when deactivated(foot on pedal) or visa versa
But its always a Positive control switch, so not on/off, its on/on, ground or 12v, so if its not one or the other then there is a Fault

Ron,

What year Rangers does this apply to !

I'm thinking here but I thought my '03 had two wires.

No, 2003 would have at least 5 wires on brake pedal switch maybe 6 for Cab brake light

Below is 2003 cruise wiring
3 wires for brake pedal position switch, 12v(fuse 9), ground and out to cruise

And the 2 wires for brake lights, maybe 3, 12v(fuse 13) and out to brake lights

Cruise would be disabled if the tan/blue wire didn't have a ground or 12v, which is what clutch switch does

Just to follow up,

I changed it out with a Motorcraft sensor.

I likely could have repaired the original by replacing the missing spring that I notices when I got the new part.

The cruise works again which is great. I love me some CC

Thanks

BOB
