egr search and destroy
one thing led to other issues. Had a handle on the EGR problem, check engine light all reset. Hooked battery back up after maintenance on the cables, bingo called it done. Not so fast, back up, now the tach starts up at 3000, idles ok, reves up ok, just don't look at the tach, use your ears. guess it needs calibrating, please don't tell me I have to get to the gauge cluster. Anybody got any ideas, help, thanks.

Welcome to the forum
2000 Ranger with 2.3l engine...............Rangers didn't have a 2.3l engine in 2000, could it be a 2.5l engine, both are 4cyl engines?
So tach shows 0RPMs with key on/engine off, but jumps up to 3,000rpms when engine is running and stays there, or does it go up and down when you REV the engine

egr headaches
I've got a mazda b2500. guess I should have told you that. any way my search now is the tach problem. when I turn the key on, not a peep from the tach. I start the engine it fires right up and the tach goes right to 3000 rpm's. I know by the sound I'm nowhere near that, I revve it up, the needle goes up to,? 4000/4500, but of course, by the sound, That's not right. 2000/2500 top's. That's why I'm saying calibrate the tach, but how? Hope to high heaven I can do it with out taking the dash out, trust me, it's not pretty. what you thinking? And yes, I'm looking for a new dash, one with all those plastic tabs still in tack on the backside. thanks for the come back.

There is no "Tach Calibration"
So the tach was working fine until you did some repairs to EGR system?
The Ranger/B-series cluster's tach can be used with 4cyl, V6 or V8 engines, there are 2 ground wires on back of cluster that are connected or disconnected to match engine cylinders, that's the only "calibration"
But nothing you have done should have effected that in a 2000 B2500
The Tach signal comes from the engine computer(PCM) not the engine itself so unless there was some wire damage in engine bays computer wiring harness I can't see a connection between EGR repairs and tach signal
You can try unhooking either battery cable for 5 minutes, then reconnecting and start engine, this resets/reboots factory software in the computer
If you want to try a replacement cluster 1996 to 2003 from Ranger or B-series will be plug and play if Grounds for tach are done correctly by YOU on installation
