Ford Ranger instrument lights problem
My Ranger [2004 Ranger Edge. 4.0 v6] had a couple of bulbs in the instrument cluster inop. Replaced all bulbs with new LED bulbs. Now Most of the lights work. In the tachometer and the speedometer there appears to be no light between the 8 OcLock and eleven OcLock positions, Also.the Hi Beam
blue indicator light does not work and none of the warning lights [low oil psi, engine, seatbelts not fastened, and ABS lights] none come on, Turn signal arrows both work, left and right. Incidentally. the Tach is kaput, However I don't see any relationship between the tach being totally inop and the lights problem.
I'm a retired aircraft mechanic but believe me this has been an educational experience, The 2004 [as far as the instruments and indicator bulbs] is unique. The 2003 Ranger was different and in 2005 Ford changed it again. I've owned a lot of Fords over the years [I just turned 79] and over the years have seen their durability and reliability consistantly improve.
However a three dollar string of Christmas tree bulbs is designed better than these instrument lights. Does anyone have any suggestions ? I'm suspecting a bad ground that's common to several of these lights. Ideas? THANKS

You have the 1st generation(2004) of the Rangers with HEC(hybrid electronic cluster) dash, has PATS module in the cluster, also SJB(smart junction box) in passenger side kick panel, the cab fuse box with Body Computer(SJB) behind it
2005 was the same but didn't have PATS(passive anti-theft system)
2006 - 2011 did have PATS module again
Its a full digital dash and its "married" to the engine computer(PCM), so these clusters can not be swapped out by DIYers, a new cluster must come from Ford Security thru a dealer, and then "remarried" by the dealer to the PCM
The new cluster is programmed for current mileage by Ford Security, to match PCM Mileage, mileage is stored in both, Ford got tired of people swapping in lower mile clusters in the 2003 and earlier Rangers, lol
Dealers can NOT change clusters miles on these, only Ford Security can, very tamper resistant setup
Google: Ford HEC
There are test you can run on the cluster
Engine won't start without correct cluster plugged in
When you turn on the key the THEFT light should come on and then go OFF, if it Flashes then PATS has disable startup
Here is a wiring diagram but there is not much to it, pretty much every thing is run by the microprocessor in the HEC, very few analog inputs that go directly to gauges or lights
