Gem (bcm) diagnosis

Hey! Random question… and please tell me if im getting annoying on here lol.

my interior dome light, the backing lights and check engine on the dash(unless the check isnt needed) and the wipers dont work on my 95 2.3.
is this a bad GEM? Or is it just every single bulb went out and the wipers croaked because shes old?

what does the gem do?

side question. Does the anti slosh module hack still work?

GEM does activate Dome light when door is opened, it also controls Wipers

It does not control reverse lights or CEL(check engine light)

GEM was the first "body control module" used in Rangers, starting in 1995, used thru 2003
Besides door open dome light and wipers, it was also used with power windows and power door locks
And in 4x4 Ranger it was the Controller

But dome light can also be activated manually using the Dimmer wheel, turn it all the way up and you will feel it "click", Dome light(and cargo light) should come on
If it doesn't come on then check Fuse 27, cab fuse box
Also Fuse 7 in engine bay fuse box

Dome light is activated by a door switch, in the latch, these switches were a common issue since 1995, they stick closed so Door Ajar light stays on, people often unplugged the switch, disabling Door Ajar light and dome light with door open

For wipers check fuses 12 and 16 in cab fuse box, if wipers have partial function then Multi-function switch(turn signal stalk) is most likely culprit

Fuse 26 cab fuse box is backup light fuse, both bulbs on reverse lights can be burned out, people often never notice 1 bulb burning out, only when both burn out do they notice

Fuses 11, 15 and 25 cab fuse box power the instrument cluster, these power the warning lights in the dash, most warning indicator bulbs should come on for 2 seconds with key on, that's a Bulb Test, not a system test, so if a bulb doesn't light up its most likely burned out

CEL bulb gets 12v with key on, as does the engine computer
When computer powers up it will GROUND the CEL bulb turning it on
So CEL should come on each time key is turned on
CEL should go off when engine starts to spin, that means computer is getting a good timing signal to start spark and fuel injectors

thank you!!! I do have one question about cab fuse 26 (backup lights) would a short be causing it to keep blowing? I know they work because ill out a new fuse in and it will work for a day or two and then the fuse burns out. Where would a short be? And would it possibly be in the radio besel? Bc the radio messed up too and i rewired it so i dont know

Manual or automatic?

Fuse 26 is also powers the OD ON/OFF switch(TCS) in automatics, common for these to short out where the 2 wires come out the shifter arm, so shifting can cause it to short randomly

Also powers DRL module(daylight running lights), turns on headlights all the time when driving, you may or may not have this module

And last but not least, in a 1995 I am sure more than one previous owner has DIYed Trailer lights, lol
So they could have exposed the wire "looking for right wire" and its now grounding out

If manual trans I would unplug the reverse light switch on the drivers side of transmission
Put in a new fuse and drive for a few days, see if fuse blows
If it does then no short back to the reverse lights, must be somewhere else

she is manual.
ill unplug the cable in the morn and plug a new fuse.
thank you!!

p.s i do not have DRL, but i do have power windows that only go down and power doors and for some reason adjustable mirrors that dont adjust. (The button is on it but the inside of the mirror is nothing and theres no wires to it)

No connection to reverse light fuse

Some one may have replace mirror and used unpowered model to save money, or replaced the whole door

Power window switches are the usual problem, especially on driver side window since its used the most
If passenger side switch and window work OK then all the wiring is OK

Power window motor is 2 wire DC, so if you give it 12volt on one wire and Ground the other wire it turns clockwise(window up)
If you reverse polarity, 12v on other wire and ground on other wire then motor spins counter-clockwise(window down)

The switches GROUND both wires in "neutral" position, not touched
When you push on the switch it unGrounds that one wire and changes it to 12volts, since other wire is grounded motor spins
If motor only spins on one direction then its missing either the 12v or the ground, which is usually a switch issue
If motor doesn't spin at all in either direction its usually a motor issue, not always, still need to test its 2 wires with volt meter
