Instrument panel swap
I have a 1992 2.3L 5 speed XLT with your basic gauge cluster. I would like to install one with the tachometer. I went to our local junk yard and found a 1994 with the cluster I wanted with the same 2.3 as mine. I had read that it was a simple plug and play install. Well, needless to say it wasn't. Maybe it was defective to begin with? They have another one there closer to my year...'91 I believe and same motor. I have no choice but to try it since they only give store credit on returns. Is this supposed to work or not with my truck not having that particular cluster to begin with?

Thank you, RonD...I did go back and get the '91 cluster and even though everything else worked properly, the tach did not. I think it was an issue with that particular one. At least all the lights didn't start going all funky as they did with the '94 cluster. Thanks again for the info, and I'll keep searching!

You can test tach wire using a Volt Meter set for AC Volts
Its not true AC volts, it's Pulsed DC volts which a Volt meter can't read in DC
So set it for AC Volts and start the engine, Ground meter and test wire
There is no 800RPM = 3vAC, but you should read some AC Volts and volts should go up with engine RPMs if tach wire is getting a signal from ICM
