Icon8 No rpm limiter, no governer, now no speedo?

Last night coming home from work i went to pass somebody on the highway, after i got back into my lane i noticed my speedo and rpms bouncing but i was holding a steady speed and rpm. i got to a set of lights and gave it hell (s10 beside me ) and noticed that my rpms were hitting the red (rpm limiter is at 5500 redline 6) and got up to 160 andd no governer? now today i got into my truck to come to work and my speedo is bouncing around and saying zero when im doing 110. anybody had this prob? dont know where to begin.

You either have a short, or your VSS sensor is dislodged slightly, causing erratic readings.

See the sensor on the top of the differential housing, with one 10mm bolt holding it on? Check that sensor out. It controls your speedometer, torque converter lock-up, governor speed restriction, tripmeter and odometer readings, and RWABS.

Make sure you get it fixed ASAP. This could be dangerous if your RWABS system doesn't work properly.

The sensor is on the right side of the pumpkin, with two metal ears sticking up to protect it. The wire connector is facing downwards.

That's exactly what I'm doing, although I'm not aware of any differences. More than likely the connector is loose or corroded, or the sensor is loose.

i dont *think* '04 has a VSS on the differential.. as they dont have RWABS, but 4WABS. So that could be a problem

Both the 97 and 2004 Rangers have the ABS sensor on the rear axle. That shouldn't matter anyway because the VSS generator is on the transmission on his 97. Only 98~2000 have the VSS off the rear axle ABS sensor.

So the Vehicular speed is determined by the transmission....interesting..

I doubt the ABS sensor would cause the symptoms listed.

you dont think a bad/wrong ABS sensor could cause an ABS light to pop up? it happened when he put in a newer axle into an older truck..

I still think you should check out the VSS. Apparently on the transmission in your case.
