OD Off Light Blinks Intermittently

I have a 2011 Ranger Sport, 4.0, 4 x 4. The OD off light blinks intermittently for only a few seconds then goes off. This has been happening for a few months but very rarely, but now more often and has finally triggered the check engine light. The error code is P0715, communication between the engine and trans. The engine runs fine and transmission shifts as it should and when the OD off light does blink the trans is in OD.(if I push the OD button it does drop out of OD). I've cleaned all the computer connections, battery cables and most of the grounds I could find but the problem still persists. I have not messed with the OD button on the shift lever. Anyone else run into this problem?

Welcome to the forum

P0715 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction

So nothing to do with OD button

This code means the the turbine sensor(TSS) is not connected, and from your description the connection was getting worse and worse over time
Unfortunately the turbine sensor is in the middle of the rotating part of transmission so disassembly is required to change it, but...................

On drivers side of transmission is the 16 pin connector for solenoids and sensors inside the transmission

Looks like this:

You can see TSS connections at pins 2 and 3 and there is an OHMs test that should read 64-126 ohms if sensor is connected internally and is "OK"

If its "off line", no connection, all is not lost yet...........
You will need to drain the fluid and remove the pan

TSS is located inside transmission seen here: https://ww2-secure.justanswer.com/up...124735_tss.gif

It has a wire lead attached that runs down and will be plugged in inside the pan area, sensor looks like this: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/U~gAA...6fr/s-l400.jpg

You can unplug its connector and test the sensor directly with OHM Meter, 64-126 ohms is expected, move its wires around while testing to see if its a wire issue
If its bad, no connection, then transmission will need to be pulled out and rebuilt assuming over 150k miles

Flashing OD OFF light always means a transmission code has been set, CEL won't come on until it becomes consistent vs intermittent, but nothing you could have done earlier except for the tests you can do now

Could be the main harness has a bad wire, unlikely but certainly possible, it looks like this: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/...1000_QL80_.jpg
With pan off do continuity test from pins 2 and 3 to their respective wires where the TSS plugs in, assuming TSS sensor ohms were in correct range

Thanks Ron for the input

If the TSS sensor is bad or not connected would it still go into OD?

Yes and no, its the input shaft speed sensor, and computer already has that info from the engine RPMs, its main purpose is to make sure torque converter is locked, i.e. engine RPMs and Input shaft RPMs are the same
But if there is no TSS signal then computer is guessing at whats happening and computer's do not like to guess, well can't really, lol

I would image some shifting issues, but you would know better of what the symptoms of P0715 are, since you have them right now

I finally had to take it to the local transmission shop... he's still working on trying to find the problem. He said he checked the TSS sensor and it was ok and suggesting an internal mechanical problem, which probably means a rebuild. Being that the trans shifts perfectly, and ok when the odoff light is flashing (the timing is a bit off sometimes). Is there anything internal to the trans that would exhibit these symptoms and warrant a rebuild?
Thanks for your input

5r55e Trans service?
* Pan drop & ATF drain
* ValveBodyBolt retorq
* Filter renewed
* PanGasket renewed
* ATF MerconV 5~7qts renewed
* Bands adjusted
Preference here is above service every 33kMiles\4Years,
plus along with routine 4kMile\6Mth Engin Oil+Filter change
do a 1qt ATF refresh (suction+refill 3/4qt ATF at TransDipTube, 1/4qt ATF at SteeringReservoir).
