So my parking brake doesn’t work on my 99 ranger. When pushing the pedal down, it goes straight to the floor free of resistance and doesn’t come back up when the release lever is pulled. When looking at the actual cable that goes into the pedal mechanism, it doesn’t get pulled when the pedal is pressed until the pedal is like a half inch from its limit position and barely pulls the cable at all. I know there’s some sort of tensioning device in the pedal mechanism, could that be the problem here? Or is it simply frozen up and can be freed? None of the parking brake cables seem to be broken but the cable to the rear of the truck hangs pretty low as if there’s no tension on the cable at all.
Sounds to me like your parking brake cable is just stretched and sagging. Need to take up the slack in the cable.
Mine had a bunch of slack in it so I removed a linkage and shortened it. This sort of works...I still have more slack in mine than I'd like though. Also you can try holding the parking brake release and pumping up and down on the pedal. It may or may not self adjust.
