Power window problem

Power window problem
Occasionally my drivers side power window will not go up. It will work fine for about 2 weeks, then stops working. All of a sudden it will start working again. When it is not working I can hear a click sound from somewhere in the dash when I press the button. What could cause this intermittent problem? Thanks

I have a 98 Extra Cab XLT Ranger with power windows. Passenger window works fine. Drivers side will roll down, but will only roll 7/8 up. Will not roll all the way up. Could that be a window track problem or what? How complicated is it to remove the door panels to inspect? Is there a youtube video that may help? Any help/advice is much appreciated! :)

Could just be an adjustment or may need to lube the tracks
Worst case is that the Regulator and motor need to be replaced
Google: how to remove door panel on 1998 ford ranger
The window slides in two tracks located on each edge of the window, the Regulator is the mechanism the electric motor turns to pull down the window and push it up.
The electric motor has a Thermal switch inside, if motor gets too hot thermal switch opens and cuts power to motor, when motor cools switch resets
Pushing UP the window, of course, requires more effort from the motor so it will heat up a bit, if the window is binding in its tracks or the regulator is binding then motor gets too hot and stops
After door panel is off hook power window switch back up and turn on the key
Lower window and then raise window, if you see window shift a bit then tracks are not aligned, realign them, you will see that adjustment with door panel off
You can put lube in the tracks, lithium grease, makes it slide easier
Also try an assist the motor when raising the window, lift bracket under window, to see if regulator is binding up.
The regulator has gears that can get stripped at one end, you will see one tooth is worn down too much so motor can't get a grip on it.
Parts shown here: Truck Parts and Truck Accessories
The regulator is Riveted to the door frame, so to change it you must drill out the rivets, you can used nuts and bolts to hold new regulator to door frame, or rivet again if you have riveting tool
As you can see from the above LMC Truck page, Ford used the same regulator and motor for Rangers from 1993 to 2011, so wrecking yards will have these parts.
Drivers door and passenger door are different so not interchangeable
Just as a Heads UP, never ever touch tempered glass edges with metal ANYTHING, it will SHATTER instantly, like its suppose to do in accidents, so NEVER use screw drivers or pliers on/near glass edges
