Power Windows Not Working In A 1997 Ford Ranger! PLEASE HELP!

Hi I just recently bought a 1997 Ford Ranger and the power windows don't work. I've already tried seing if there's power to the switches which there isn't. There's no break or cut in the wires either. Whenever I push the buttons I can't hear the Motor or the window even trying to move. Do I need new switches? Maybe a new fuse? Does the Motor need replaced? PLEASE HELP! Thanks

Welcome to the forum

You can download your owners manual here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/

There is a 20 amp fuse in Engine bay Fuse box for power windows and door locks, do the door locks work?

There is a 10amp fuse in the Cab fuse box, #12, it powers the power window Relay when key is ON, no relay on no power to windows

You need to check these fuse, NOT just LOOK at them.

Power window relay should be in Relay Box 1, its under the dash above gas pedal area under radio, it has a cover that comes off, it faces brake pedal
5 to 8 relays are in there, check owners manual for diagram, it would be at the end

Thanks

Thank you for the help! There's no power door locks by the way. I'll pull out those fuses and take a look at them.

Then you do not have Factory Power windows

The 1997 Power Group option was power windows/power locks so didn't come with one or the other, had to be both

So some one may have swapped in power window door panels and regulators
See if the window motor/regulator is bolted in or riveted in, rivets would be Factory install

If it is a custom build then factory wiring and fuses won't be correct

Ok it looks like everything is bolted in. Would it be worth it to try getting the power windows fixed or swap back to manual windows?

The power window system just needs 12v to both doors from a fuse, which should be either under the dash or in the engine bay by the battery, an inline 20amp fuse

And the drivers door switch(master) is the GROUND for both doors so it needs a good ground, usually behind the drivers side kick panel

So it would be easier to trace the wires and find that fuse
The wiring is pretty straight forward

On the master there will be 2 wires to the motor in that door
Then 2 wires that run out of the door over to the passenger door, these are both grounds when master switch is "in neutral", passenger button not being pressed
Then a 12v wire from a fuse
And a Ground wire from drivers side kick panel

So 6 wires total

Passenger side has 2 wires to passenger side motor
2 wires from drivers side door, the grounds
Then a 12v wire from same fuse as drivers door

So 5 wires total

The power window relay was used for accessory delay feature, also just simpler to power on/off window buttons
Accessory delay means things like power widows and radio would stay on after key was off, so you could roll up a window if it was down without turning key on again, the relay would turn off if a door opened

Unless you have a short in the system having 12v to power windows 24/7 won't drain the battery
