Im new to the 4x4 thing, always owned cars
my question is, when i put it in 4x4 and turn the steering wheel all the way to the right or left and i give it a little bit of gas it moves like 2inches and stops, moves 2 inches and stops and keeping doing that, should I not be turning the steering wheel all the way or is something wrong?

DO NOT DO THAT!!!!

The front and rear axles are locked together in 4wd. when you turn, they are trying to spin at different rates (turning different circles) so they will bind.

On a soft surface this does not hurt the driveline, as the tires can slide or scrub the differences. On a hard surface, you are binding and loading the driveline....something will break eventually.

 

yea its ok offroad for it to do that, mine does, but on road i would never lock in to 4x4

 

4x4 and AWD are different. AWD vehicles have a differential between the front and back differentials...this will let one spin faster than the other. So if you run around in 2WD all the time (as you should on pavement), your rears will wear more and be smaller. When you put it in 4x4, the transfer case spins it's output shafts at the same rate...so you get a bind front-to-back.

Before I knew better, I did the same thing...but it was more like I had the emergency brakes still engaged...it just didn't want to roll.

...at least that's how I understand it.

 

You have obviously havnt driven in the snow with a locker in the rear.

 

Thank you SO much for the info, i only did it once when i was pulling into a parking spot at the college, put it in 2WD right after it happened

 

yeah 4wd never on a dry pavement only in snow or off reading. what college do you go to reading is really close to me
