ranger not starting-intermitent

ranger not starting-intermitent
i have a detailrd post on the newbie thread please read if you have a chance.
my ranger-94 4 banger was well kept and has 139000 easy miles.
sometimes it will refuse to start, usually during 90 degree days.
sometimes i can unplug the mass air flow sensor and it will start right up.
other times i have to take a gas soaked rag and put it over the intake"between the airbox and throttle body and it will start right up and run.
the "rag" method always causes a start, sometimes once started i can remove the rag and it keeps running, other times i spend at least an hour dripping gas on the rag while the truck is idiling and finally i can ween it of the rag,plug the mass airflow sensor uo and drive it .
the check engine light is always on and by the way the gas gague woorks when it wants to.
please help.
