SJB/BCM Issues

Hey there Ranger Owners...!!! I am new to this Forum and this will be my first post....story begins with my friend, telling me that her '09 Ranger 4.0L V6 4x4 (with keyless entry, but uses an ignition key), which has A/C, power mirrors, door locks and windows....about three weeks ago; she was unhappy because she bought this vehicle brand new, and now the power mirrors, windows and door locks do not work...we checked the wiring for the switches in the drivers' door, and everything looked brand new as it came from the factory...I removed the window switch, and took it apart to look for scoring or corrosion...

...(one weird caveat; the passenger door locking switch would operate the power locks!)...no signs of either...next we looked at the interior fuse panel; which, later on, I found out is referred to as the Smart Junction Box or the Body Control Module....upon initial inspection, all the wiring and fuses appear to be intact as from the factory...when I pulled the 30A cartridge fuse, no signs of being blown; but, when I removed the Power Accessory Relay, two of the terminals were covered in corrosion, and there was enough water to well up in the corner of box.....

...apologies for the blurry pic, but you can see that the water has been tainted a turquoise/teal colour, which suggested to me that there is more behind the box...

...with the SJB/BCM removed, it was easier to inspect...all the fuses were intact...
by https://www.flickr.com/photos/157084925@N07/, on Flickr

...I looked behind the panel for any signs of water intrusion...nothing.....
by https://www.flickr.com/photos/157084925@N07/, on Flickr

...I felt compelled to remove the back cover of the module to see if there was any signs of water damage inside...
by https://www.flickr.com/photos/157084925@N07/, on Flickr

...this was taken after I used a half dozen squirts of DeOxit around the perimeter of the board....the outside edge of the cover showed evidence of water intrusion and the edge of the circuit board has a frosty coating of teal fuzz....I am pretty sure that this module is on its' last legs...I got another SJB/BCM from a salvage yard to swap out to see if there is any improvement; BUT, the newer module is from an '07 that apparently didn't have power windows, mirrors, or door locks, due to the absence of female connectors behind the corresponding spots in the box....FORD has declared this component OBSOLETE and a new one would be over a thousand bucks...!!! ...after realizing the salvage yard module wouldn't work; I put the original module back in place, and went to connect the levered switch blocks...when I put the top block in place, the box started clicking as though it were a hazard signal...when the other switch boxes were connected, the clicking stopped....I put the trim pieces back in place and thought everything was as it was before the swap; but, when she went to drive away, NOW the radio isn't working and there are also NO Head Lamps....what have I done...?!?!? ...is it possible that the circuit board has just deteriorated further, to include the loss of head lights and radio as well as the original symptoms of no Power Windows, Mirrors, or Door Locks....??

I know that this is a rather specific query; but I am also a member over on the Vortex for my VWs...and over there, being specific pays dividends...

...also, to that end, IF by any obscure chance anyone HAS access to another SJB/BCM with the part number 85LT-14B476-DA...I would be unbelievably grateful if it were available for purchase....

Thanks In Advance for any light anyone might be able to shed on this issue....

Was windshield ever replaced?
Bad window seal at passenger side will leak down to SJB
2009 could have rusted thru in the corner but a longshot

In any case I would get windshield pulled out and checked for where it is leaking.......

BEFORE replacing SJB.

I think you transposed numbers??

8L5T-14B476-DA would be 2008 and probably to 2011 Ranger SJB, so not unusual for 2009 to have that number

8L = 2008, but if part didn't change in 2009 then same 2008 part number is used until part is changed enough to get a new number

So you can have a 1994 part number in a 2017 Ford, if part never changed, just the way they do it

But even if you get a used one it will most likely need to be programmed by Ford Dealer once it is installed.............if you want all options this truck has to work
The SJB is installed at the factory with base programming, then once Options are ordered/added, i.e. power door locks, power windows, daylight running lights, ect............they are programmed before truck is shipped.
So used one will have programming for the Ranger it came from, which may or may not match all your options, 8L5T-14B476-DA will match 2009 Ranger, just programming may not be the same
New one will just have base options

...Thank You For The Info...

Hey there RonD...thanks very much for your quick reply...!!! ...I work at a Toyota Dealership and had asked my parts guy to find one for me...he was the one who told me that the part was obsolete; just relaying what was told to him by the parts guy at the Ford dealership that we deal with/have an account with....just out of curiosity; I called Summit Ford (just up Hwy. 27 above Finch) and talked to Adam at the parts counter who enlightened me somewhat...he said that the SJB/BCM for my friends' vehicle IS available for the prepaid price of ~$385.00 CDN plus tax...which really made my day...!!! I sent a message to my friend who is now also quite happy to learn of the module being available.....She is going to go to Summit tomorrow morning for an oil change and have Adam inspect the part so that the proper replacement module can be ordered....if a new module is installed, the module should have the factory settings already activated for that specific VIN/Vehicle/trim level, no...? ...or would she have to fork out for another hour of labour to have the new module programmed...? Thanks in advance again for any replies...Cheers Gentlemen...!!!

Thanks RonD

Thank You for your quick reply RonD...windshield is original, (no visible rust from the outside or in), thanks for the info about the part numbers, that should help me out in the future...the search continues; I did find a used SJB, but it was from an '07 that didn't have power windows...I returned it...then, on a whim, called Summit Ford to find out that the module is not obsolete and CAN be ordered ($428.65 CDN taxes in; I wonder what they want for their restocking charge!)....Adam, their parts guy, said new unit is "Plug'n'Play", no programming required, done at factory....but, it turns out that the new SJB provided No Joy, and I must continue to search for the cause of the power windows, mirrors, & door locks suddenly not working three weeks ago.....when I discovered that the new (used) panel provided no solution, I put the original unit back in place; however, when plugging in the multi-plug blocks, I should have disconnected the negative terminal on the battery, (I did when I tried the brand new unit!), because the top plug, when plugged in, created a clicking sound similar to a hazard relay within the SJB....when my friend drove away, she said she had no headlamps, dash lights, nor radio....the next day I took a look inside the fuse box in the engine compartment, only to find that the 40 A cartridge fuse in the #1 position had blown...I took the cartridge from the #3 position and put it in the #1 position, and her lights & radio worked again....I didn't have another 40 A cartridge to replace the one taken from #3, so I used a 30 A cartridge fuse that I had from before....all was fine until this afternoon when she declared that her fuel gauge and speedometer had now pooched out....I said it was likely due to the under amped cartridge, and sure enough, the 30 A blew in the 40 A slot, when replaced with the proper 40 A, the speedo and fuel gauge came back to life....however, the original problem of powerless windows, mirrors and door locks still remains....is there ANOTHER fuse panel under the drivers' side of the dash that I am missing...? I had a look, only to find a lonely blue hazard relay and a half dozen connectors amidst a mess of wiring....I did notice, however, that there is a rusted area beneath the drivers' floor mat, next to the lower curve of the leading edge of the front of the door...I didn't get a chance to closely inspect the area this evening, but, I will have a closer look tomorrow after she finishes work....perhaps I will find a grounding wire that isn't doing its' job anymore; that would pretty much explain the failure of the powered items, all of the symptoms, and electrical oddities.....hoping to find something...!!!

If anyone has any further insight; I am wide open to any ideas....Thanks Guys...!!!

P.S. Does anyone have an interior wiring schematic..? ...the Haynes manual only shows engine and chassis wiring for the '95 model 'and future' models....very vague....she has an '09 Ranger 4x4 4.0L with keyless entry...Cheers...!!!

Same Issue

Hi There,
I had the exact same issue. Power locks will lock/unlock from the keyless entry and from the passenger door but not the drivers side door. Power windows wont roll down or up. Power mirrors don't work. Even had water in the SJB, cleaned that out and still didn't work. I took the drivers side door panel off and checked the power line on the window switch (black/blue) to the ground (black) and only had around 8 volts. I then checked the resistance from the ground wire (black) to the ground of the cigarette lighter and found the resistance was really high. With further troubleshooting I found that the ground (G200) to the chassis was corroded, the ground is behind the plastic panel next to the parking brake. I cleaned and rerouted the ground to another spot on the chassis and everything is working perfectly now. Hopefully this helps.

Regards

Icon5 Similar issue, SJB maybe?

I have a 2009 Ranger XLT w/4.0L, power windows, and door locks. I've been getting an intermittent door ajar and interior light while driving. Any bump will cause the momentary chirp, door ajar dash indicator, and interior light to come on for a while and then go out again. I have checked and ruled out faulty door switches and I'm looking for other possible causes. I will inspect the ground although it seems unlikely given that most of the accessories work fine. I will probably pull the SJB out for an inspection. Anticipating the worst,, I have located a firm that will refurbish the SJB but I don't know yet if it will have to be reprogrammed by a Ford dealer. Will post when I find out more details. The refurbishment is $239 and comes with a 1 year warranty which is in line with other components that I have had refurbished on other vehicles, e.g. ABS brake modulator on 2000 VW Passat.

Welcome to the forum

It is a door switch problem, there are 4 of them
The Door switch is a Ground trigger, meaning when door is closed switch is open, when door is open switch is closed and its 1 wire is now a Ground, and that triggers dome light and "door ajar" light

Most common fix is to spray each switch with a lube, like WD40, and then open a close the door repeatedly

The fact it Grounds when you hit a bump would mean to me that one of the switches is loose or failed

Uncommon would be 1 of the door wires being shorted to a Ground, that can happen in the door loom usually on drivers door since it is used the most, wires are bent open and closed daily and can rub which wears off insulation.

Wiring diagram below, not sure how the Pin numbers work on the SJB but wiring colors should help, as said these 4 wires are NOT grounds when doors are closed
